Autumn rolled her eyes when he said it was the best toast, but she couldn’t stop her lips from curving into a smile, feeling a twinge in her chest at the sentiment. “Don’t worry, I’ll have this all cleaned up before I leave.” She’d found a room in a motel in the next city over and her car was already picked up after she called a tow. Her car would be fixed with a new spare in two hours.

Charlie paused when she brought up leaving, the toast suddenly feeling like sawdust in his mouth. He swallowed his bite and looked at her, "you don't...have to leave," he found himself saying, unsure why but he didn't mind having someone else around the apartment, even if it was a stranger.

Autumn turned on the water in the sick and got to work washing the dishes, but stopped when he said she didn’t have to leave. She didn’t like the idea of staying in a musty hotel room in the middle of nowhere, but she also didn’t want to impose herself on Charlie after he’d basically saved her last night. “I… I don’t know whether to tell you no or promise I’ll never cook again.” She nervously chuckled, wondering if it was weird for her to agree to stay at his apartment.

Charlie's shoulders relaxed a little when she didn't freak out about how weird this was. He paused, looking at his toast then at her and shrugged, "you can limit your cooking to toast and I think we'll be okay." He joked, finishing off the slice and dusting his hands off on his pajama pants.

Autumn but her lower lip in thought as she set aside a clean dish and moved onto the next one. She was listing the pros and cons, which, the only con of staying with Charlie, was that she didn’t know him. “Alright, if you are one hundred percent sure about letting me stay,” she was already canceling the motel in her head before she even said yes, “But I’ll start my search for my own place today.” She didn’t want him to think she would be freeloading forever and she already figured she could either pay him or keep the apartment clean so she wasn’t just mooching off him.

Charlie couldn't stop his eyebrows raising from surprise, he didn't think she'd actually go for it but part of him was a little excited at the prospect of companionship. Though he knew Yasmin wasn't good for him part of him did miss her but he wondered if it was just the company he was missing, sometimes it was hard to come home when he knew he'd just be on his own. He tried not to let her next words dampen his spirit. "Okay, sounds like a good plan to me." He checked the time and held back a groan, "I need to take a shower and start getting ready for work." He said, wishing he could take the day off but he still had the rest of the week to go through.

Autumn felt herself let out a sigh of relief when he said it was a good plan, “I can pay.” She offered quickly, not wanting to let another second go by before offering. She nodded her head when he said he needed to shower and get ready for work, wondering if night shift was his usual. “Do you work every night?” She knew he had to have a day off, but she already felt like he was just going to disappear every night, and part of her felt a little worried about being alone. At least she was in a gated apartment and you couldn’t get in without a code.

Charlie paused when she offered to pay, not wanting to make her pay if she was already going through a hard time. "Don't worry about it, clean up after yourself and you'll be fine." He shrugged, "yeah, except for my days off, which are different every week, but that's what I get for being the new kid on the block."

Autumn frowned, wanting to do something to pay him back, which left finding ways to have food without burning anything, and keeping the place clean. She could easily order food and cleaning wasn’t a big deal to her, it was the least she could do. “Do you get off work at the same time?” She asked, figuring it was the same time he’d found her on the side of the road.

Charlie nodded, "for the most part, unless something serious happens." He told her, which was hit or miss considering the part of the hospital he worked in. "Then it depends on when I get home...I could always text you if I have to stay late?" He offered, at least that way when he came home and she was asleep she wouldn't be scared.

“Oh, I guess we should exchange numbers. Now that we are roommates.” Autumn chuckled lightly, but her smile reached her eyes as she finished cleaning off the last of the dishes and dried her hands off. “And before you go, I just need the Wi-Fi, that’ll make it easy to find a house.” She wondered how many nights he had to work late, how many serious problems came in, and what was considered serious enough for that, but she didn’t want to keep bombarding him with questions.

"Oh yeah, of course." Charlie nodded, finding himself returning her smile with one of his own then looked around, "I have the WI-FI stuff written down somewhere," he said as he walked into the kitchen, pulling out a drawer by the fridge that was filled with carious pens, sticky notes, and different odds and ends. He sorted through the drawer until he finally found a folded piece of paper and held it out to her, "I never customized it or whatever people do so sorry in advance for the weird password."

Autumn watched him search the kitchen for the password, seeing what people might call organized chaos happening before her, “Do you know where everything is in this place?” She asked, betting he did, or at least, a general idea. She took the piece of paper and looked over the password, chuckling at it, “Reminds me of a tiktok making fun of these passwords.” She knew several people who hadn’t customized their passwords or internet with funny names, though most of them were older than fifty.

"Yeah, I usually put things back where I found them so that helps." He replied a bit sheepishly, knowing some people wouldn't like or understand his methods but they were what worked for him. "Tiktok?" He asked with a slight frown, he'd heard about it from kids in the hospital but still didn't fully grasp the concept or what was so great about it.

“That’s the best way to organization, well, without going crazy,” Autumn emphasized going crazy because that’s how she felt with her life being so organized as it was. It was freaking her out slightly that she should be packed tight with appointments and filming today, but she wasn’t, she made a terrible breakfast instead. She smiled softly at the fact she was happy to make Charlie breakfast, though snapped her attention back to him at the question. “Oh, Tik toks a stupid app, but it’s got a lot of funny videos.” She had to scroll past the ones about her too often lately, asking where she was, but it still helped her fall asleep.

Charlie chuckled and nodded, whatever he did worked for him but he didn't mind small changes here and there. He rubbed his eyes again, willing himself to wake up but all he really wanted was to curl up in bed again. "Huh, the kids talk about it all the time but I've never looked into it." He shrugged, doubting he'd ever look into it but isn't any skin off his nose.

Autumn stopped herself from asking how many kids he saw in the hospital and a barrage of other questions. She hated the thought of children being in the hospital, and hoped they were just minor things. “It can suck you in easily, so maybe don’t look into it now when you need to get ready for work.” She chuckled, hoping she wouldn’t make him late.

"Good to know." Charlie chuckled, "now I need to get ready." He said and to his room to get ready for work, partially wishing that he could have the day off to help Autumn settle in, though he wasn't sure how he could do that...but an extra day off would also be nice. Once he was changed into scrubs and had his hair pulled back Charlie meandered back into the living room, holding back a yawn.

Autumn didn’t hesitate to grab her laptop once he disappeared to get ready. She settled onto the couch after making a cup of tea and put in the Wi-Fi and the password. The first thing she did was check her email, and instantly regretted it when she saw how many were in her inbox. Hundreds, and she could see her manager trying to desperately reach her. She frowned as she opened the mail from her assistant instead who said the sale of her house was going through and her things would be put into storage until further notice, so at least she had one less thing to think about. She noticed Charlie return to the living room, yawning. “I hope I didn’t wake you too early.” Did he sleep a little later? Or he probably should have gone to bed sooner, he’d been helping her instead.

Charlie looked up at Autumn and smiled softly, "don't worry about it, I'm just not a morning person, never have been." He told her, trying not to think about how Yasmin would constantly snap at him for not being an early riser. He didn't understand back then why it was such an issue but now he wondered if it was because she wanted him up to make her dinner. He walked over to the counter and picked up his keys from where he'd left them the night before. "I'll see you later tonight though."

“Neither am I, I hate waking up early.” That was one of the reasons why Autumn wasn’t jumping back into her old life, these past couple of days have been amazing, sleeping however long she wanted, and not having an alarm clock dictate her life. “I’ll probably be asleep, but who knows, I was always a night owl before…” Before she was forced to sleep when she could, even if that meant at nine at night, even if her body sometimes refused.

"At least that's two of us." He chuckled and slipped on his shoes. "Well whether I see you or not, have a good night." He smiled, "you can text me if you need anything and I'll try to get back to you." He told her before heading out the door.

Autumn nodded when he said to text him if she needed him, though she wondered how he’d feel if she just texted him because she was bored. “Have a goodnight. Hope it’s a good one.” She wasn’t sure if that meant a night that kept him busy or a night with nothing going on, but hopefully it went easy on him.

"We'll see." Charlie laughed over his shoulder as he left, locking the door behind him and making a mental note to get a copy of his key made but he couldn't turn around now, he had to get to work. He went down to his car and jumped in, but glanced at his apartment window one more time before driving away.

Autumn watched the lock on the door turn and listened to his echoing footsteps. She waited five minutes before pulling out her phone and bringing up a fresh text message to Charlie. ‘Do you like peanut butter?’ The End
