“Just need a few things,” Azalea told herself as she entered the grocery store, shocking her slightly that it hadn’t changed in the years she’d been gone. She grabbed a cart and got started, not wanting to be in this place for very long, but it was the only grocery store in town. She worried about running into high school classmates, their parents, or even worse, running into Dustin. She’d been lucky so far since she came home to be with Natalie that she hadn’t run into him, though she didn’t venture out much, and she avoided certain places she knew he’d be. His bar was the main building she avoided, even if those twinkling lights at the top tormented her, a reminder that they were both in their past for a reason.

Dustin never liked grocery shopping, if he had it his way he'd eat fast food every day or just eat from the bar but after realizing how shitty it made him feel he tried to do better, at least by trying to make dinner and breakfast at home, which meant he had to brave the grocery store. In any other town it would probably be fine but in this town, where everyone knew everyone, it took him forever to wade through the small talk since not saying hi always seemed rude, especially when the main cashier, Minnie, who refused to retire and was best friends with his mom, had to strike up an at least twenty minute conversation to check in on how he was doing even though the answers were almost always the same: the bar is great, no I don't have a girlfriend, yup I know Mom wants grand kids and I'm getting older. It was like torture but he still drug himself to the one grocery shop in town, pushing a cart up and down the aisles. "Beans, could make chili or something." He muttered to himself, pushing his cart down an aisle and towards a display of canned beans towards the front of the store. He had just reached that spot when someone caught his eye, making him freeze. No...there was no way she came back here, he tried to tell himself but his pounding heart said otherwise as he watched Azalea walk around the produce aisle as if she had never left. ![](https://buffalojackson.com/cdn/shop/files/Wool-Shirtjac-Timbervalleyplaid_900x.jpg?v=1703170973)

Azalea had picked what she needed from the produce section and moved on, not realizing there were a few eyes watching her. She wasn’t used to the feeling, she was usually the one staring, snapping pictures, but she should have known coming back to a small town would stir up trouble. She now found herself in a conversation with one of her mom’s friends, talking about what she’d been up to and why she was back, hating that she would be repeating this information for a while.

Dustin felt like he was frozen as he watched her until her heard her voice, feeling like it snapped him out of his trance. His first was to hide, he backed up, going to spin his cart around without realizing how close he was to the tower of beans, knocking back into it and sending the beans in a cascade, hitting the floor and rolling everywhere while Dustin stood like a deer in headlights from the sound, knowing he had just majorly screwed up.

It was the sounds of crashing cans and one that rolled over to her that had brought Azalea’s attention from speaking with her mom’s friend and came face to face with Dustin. She felt the air rush out of her, memories of their stolen moments under the bleachers, it all came crashing down like the cans he hit when she remembered he didn’t want to try and make it out there with her. She turned back to her mom’s friend, not knowing the two of them had dated, but she kept eyeing him from the side, which wasn’t the reaction she wanted because she didn’t want him to know she still loved him.

As Dustin stared back at her he felt the emotions from the years they were together crashing into him, quickly followed by a wave of regret for how things had happened and the second she turned away from him he felt his heart shrivel up and crumble to dust. He wanted to run out of that damn grocery store but he knew he couldn't leave the mess for someone else to clean up. He looked down and started to pick up the cans, stacking them back up the best that he could.

Part of Azalea didn’t plan to walk by Dustin, but the part that yearned for him seemed to be pulling her like a thread to him. She bent down and picked up a few cans, placing them carefully on the stand. It was an awkward silence at first, but a comfortable one that reminded her of when they first started talking. After helping him clean up the mess she stood with her hands on her cart, not trusting that she wouldn’t just reach out and touch him. “Hi Dustin.” She forced herself to say, her lips easily curling into a smile, and fluttering started up again in her chest.

Dustin made himself focus on cleaning up the cans, part of hoping once he was done he could take off and avoid the awkwardness and guilt all together. He thought the plan was working until someone joining and it was like he automatically knew who it was without having to look. "H-hi Azalea." He told her, wanting to pull her into his arms but kept himself busy with the cans.

Azalea instantly regretted coming over to help him, hearing him say her name had her heart racing, but she reminded herself that they were nothing more than normal adults. “Nice to see you. How um. How have you been?” She actually knew how he was, having her parents still in town, running the diner still, it was pretty much the gossip mill.

"Oh, uh," Dustin tried not to stammer but the words didn't seem to want to come out the more he stared at her until he finally had to look away, focusing on stacking some of the cans, "fine...just been working, running the bar, how about you?" He asked, not wanting to admit that he often stalked her social media but he could never bring himself to reach out, not wanting to destroy her peace for a second time.

Azalea frowned slightly at his reaction, though she didn’t let it linger in her mind, she was suddenly caught off guard even if it would be natural for him to ask how she was doing. “Oh. Well, I’m just taking time off from work to help my sister.” She wasn’t sure if Dustin knew what had happened, but she figured he didn’t need to know the full details at the moment. “So, your dad actually let you take over the bar?” She was honestly shocked his dad had given him the reigns, in high school he’d been all about control of the bar, and didn’t want to change anything.

Dustin grimaced slightly and nodded, "oh yeah...I heard a little about that, I'm sorry it happened." He said, with how the town was and where he worked it didn't take long for the rumor mill to reach him. He had been at a loss of if he should do something, like send a card but nothing seemed appropriate so he just...hadn't done anything to reach out to the family. "I don't know if I would say let...it was more like...Ma forced him to." He said with a little chuckle, remembering to grab a can of beans to put in his cart. Working and eventually owning the bar hadn't been in his plans but after he had flunked out of college it wasn't like there was much else for him to do.

Azalea only nodded her head, having felt like she lost the love of her life already, even if he was standing right in front of her. “It’s, rough, but she’s working through it.” At least on the outside Natalie seemed to be doing okay, her sister had opened the bookstore and café, and it was doing well already. “Ah, that makes more sense. Was wondering how your dad let go.” His mom definitely wanted to travel, see the world, do things other than stay in this tiny town.

Dustin nodded, still feeling a little guilty about not being able to be there for her family in some way but it was too late. "Yeah...I saw she opened up a place, it looks nice." He offered, he'd just been too chicken shit to go in there so he stayed away. He smiled a little bit at the talk of his parents, "yeah...he still checks in a lot though and any time their travels come near here they have to stop by and he's gotta tell me whatever I'm doing wrong." He shrugged, used to it by now, he still didn't feel like he deserved to work the place, that it was just given to him so he had something to do since he wasn't as successful as his older brothers.

“Yeah, the sweet new treats from the café have really up the place. You should try it.” Azalea felt her face flush the second she suggested such a thing. She realized she wanted him to show up, hoping she’d see him there, hoping for something that wasn’t there anymore. She cleared her throat and kept going like it was nothing to her to tell him to try her sister’s place. “Ah, definitely sounds like your dad. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that one day he’ll stop.” She crossed her fingers without realizing it, something she had done since she was a kid.

Dustin perked up with the promise that she meant what she had said, "I think I will." He said, unable to keep himself from smiling just a little bit, a little bit of hope nudging into his chest but he tried to ignore it. "Yeah...we'll see, they're down in Florida right now so I have a bit of break right now." Though that didn't mean there wasn't a shadow looming over him. If it was up to him he would have remodeled the bar by now to make it more modern but he could see the vein bursting in his fathers forehead if he tried. "How...how long are you staying?"

Azalea almost let out a sigh of relief but kept it to just a small smile at his answer. “The pastry chef she hired on makes everything from scratch and I can promise you her Danishes are amazing.” Of course, she had to try one, despite her favorite thing to eat being an éclair. “They aren’t doing the whole Disney thing are they?” she asked, unable to see his dad wearing mickey ears and riding rides. “Oh um, just until Baseball training season kicks off again.” She was taking a break from photographing football to be here, though it wasn’t that big of a deal to miss out.

"Good to know." Dustin half smiled but chuckled when she brought up Disney, quickly shaking his head, "no, more like the swamp tours and restaurant scene." He said, the thought of either of his parents forcing their way through Disney making him wanting to burst out in laughter but he held it back, though a smile tried to sneak onto his face. "Oh," he nodded, feeling bile rise up in the back of his throat at the thought of baseball, that's what he'd gotten a scholarship for...until he utterly fucked up and flunked out of school. "That's cool."

Azalea chuckled lightly, wondering if his mom would ever get away from the restaurant business, “Well, I hope they don’t stop by for a visit until you’re ready,” Though she knew it was unlikely to happen, his parents always had a bad habit of dropping in at the wrong moment, like when they came home early and caught them on the couch. The memory had her face flushing, and now she was the one wanting to look at everything but Dustin, she hated how easy it was to just conjure up those moments. His tone of voice suddenly changed, and she couldn’t help but feel disappointment all the sudden, “So, at least, um... A couple of months." She wondered if she could just hide out at her parents, though she promised to help them at the diner and Natalie asked for her to come to the Café.

"Ugh, you know how they are." Dustin chuckled a little, the same incident she was thinking of popping into his head but it made him a bit embarrassed when he realized his house still looked exactly the same. "Oh, well, that's cool, I'm sure your family is happy to have you back." He said, wanting to add that he was too but held back, knowing that she shouldn't expect anything to happen between them.

Azalea had to laugh, knowing the same moment was popping into his head, making her feel hopeful that maybe he still had feelings. She opened her mouth to respond, feeling like this was him trying to say goodbye and move on, like they had right before college. “They are yea…” She looked down at her hands, hating the way she felt, so she forced herself to move on if he had. “Guess I’ll see you around then?” Though she told herself she was planning to avoid him, hating the fact that she invited him to her sisters café.

Hearing her laughter made something shift in Dustin's chest, feeling like a dagger was being shoved into it, reminding him of how badly he had screwed everything up, but then again had he really? She'd been able to go and make a name for herself while he was a washed up golden boy. "Uh, yeah, guess so." He replied, not wanting to hold out hope. He looked at Azalea, feeling all the words he had wanted to tell her die in his throat, before turning and going down another aisle.

Azalea watched him turn away from her again, she felt her heart ache with the need to reach out to him. She sighed as she moved onto continue her shopping, thinking he had dipped out as soon as possible, but she turned the corner into another aisle and almost ran into his cart. “Ooops. I didn’t see you there.” She admitted, moving her basket around his and past him, though she eyed him over her shoulder, unable to help herself.

Dustin turned his focus to shopping for groceries, mentally checking his list as he went, which left him distracted as he continued along the aisle so that he didn't see him and Azalea on a collision course until it was too late. He looked up in surprise, "oh me too, sorry." He said sheepishly, watching as she moved around him, unable to stop himself as he turned to look after her.

When she noticed he was watching her, she quickly turned her attention to the shelves, searching for what she needed. Her heart was racing as she spotted the box she needed and to her luck, it was on the top shelf. She tried reaching it on her tiptoes, but she could barely touch it.

When she caught him Dustin felt his face turn red, he looked away but from the corner of his eye he saw her struggle for something on the top shelf. He smiled a little bit, remembering a time in the library when she had been in a similar predicament and, since no one else was around, he had reached up to help her. He left his cart, walking over and reaching up, grabbing what she needed and held it out to her. "Here."

Azalea had hoped he just disappeared from the aisle after that awkward eye contact, they had made, it would mean he wouldn’t be witnessing her struggle. She whipped her head when someone reached up, her heart and brain hoping for two different people. She stared at the item in his hand before slowly looking up in his face, hearing the song ‘Waterloo’ by ABBA playing one part over and over again in her head. “Th-Thanks.” She said, her lips curling into a smile, unable to ignore the fluttering returning to her chest.

"You're welcome." Dustin half smiled, trying to will the rapid pace of his heart to slow down before it exploded. He looked away, feeling like he shouldn't linger and headed back to his cart to finish his shopping so he could go home.

Azalea watched him go once more, wondering how she was going to keep doing that to herself, hoping he’d open his eyes and try for her again. When he disappeared to another aisle, she went back to finishing up her shopping list, heading for the checkout and finding three people in line ahead of her, and only one cashier. “Great.” She pulled out her phone to text Natalie that she’d be a little bit longer as she stepped into line.

As Dustin went up and down the aisles getting what he needed he couldn't stop himself from thinking about Azalea, wondering if she would be open to trying things again, if she could even think about doing that after how he had so stupidly ended things. He tried to not mull it over but it was hard to not think about it, especially when he got in line and found himself behind Azalea, without thinking he edged his cart forward, playfully bumping into her but quickly looked away, feigning innocence.
