Cosette hadn’t thought about needing power tools to help, but that would pose a problem, “Well then, I guess you could ask Thomas for help, and there’s the security guard,” she shrugged, not knowing his name, but he’d walked her to her car when it was super late. She finished the final drawer and closed it with a smile, “I think that’s it.” She turned to the giant pile of trash they had dumped onto the floor.

Little hairs on the back of Silas's neck rose when Cosette mentioned the security guard, wondering what the reason would be for the two of them to connect would be and hoped it was due to their work instead of something else that was making his jealousy grumble. "We won't know until we go see it." He said, a bit relieved they were done going through everything but then turned to see all the trash they had stacked up, "damn, that looks like Mount Everest." he joked.

Cosette giggled at his joke and nodded, “You’ll have plenty to build a bonfire at least,” she could easily see the paper going up in flames in seconds, “And now the office won’t have to be deep cleaned for years to come.” She teased, looking over to him with a big smile on her face.

"No kidding." Silas chuckled, looking over at her but his throat tightened at how her smile brightened her face and the way the sun seemed to illuminate her, making him speechless for a minute. "You could come," he blurted out, "if I take this stuff and have a bonfire at my house I mean." He quickly added, "the boys will probably be there but I'll make sure they behave."

Cosette felt her chest flutter at the invitation, though she told herself it was just him being nice and nothing more, “I’d love to, I can bring the ah, marshmallows.” She offered, laughing lightly as she thought about his son, and nephews. “I’m sure they’ll be busy having fun. I won’t mind.” She would just pretend, for a little while, that it was like being back in France with her own family. Her heart ached a little, missing them, feeling homesick, and wanted nothing more than to take a flight back

Silas smiled, a wave of relief making his shoulders loosen up a little. "Sounds like a plan to me and they'll probably run off to cause trouble." He said with a roll of his eyes but the boys usually didn't get in trouble so he was always a bit more lenient with the when it came to things like curfews and strict rules.

“As boys do,” Cosette didn’t have brothers, but her cousins were the same way, always running off to cause trouble somewhere for her aunt and uncle. She sighed and turned towards the basket she had brought. “So, I guess we can reward ourselves.” She said with a big smile, walking over to the basket and opening it up. It was a fancy one that actually kept things cool or warm depending on what you needed. She had stuffed the basket with cheese, bread, crackers, fruits and vegetables, but she also had brought sandwiches she had made earlier this morning, though she didn’t know exactly what he liked, she had packed different options.

"Oh yeah," Silas chuckled, "if you're available we could have a bonfire this Friday." He offered, thinking that was more than enough notice. He had almost forgotten about the picnic basket until she picked it up and he smiled, his body seeming to wake up and tell him that it was hungry. "I think we definitely deserve a reward, or at least you do, I wouldn't have done all of this if it wasn't for you."

“I don’t have plans, kind of happens when you move to a whole new country,” Cosette joked as she moved to toss the picnic blanket on the floor of the office, thinking there wasn’t a need to leave anywhere for this, “You might be right about that.” She laughed, sitting down with the basket, and pulled out a couple bottles of water. She didn’t want to get them in trouble by bringing wine, though she had thought about it.

"Lucky me then." He joked, looking over as she set up the picnic in his office, a bit surprised but he wasn't going to complain. He stepped over and carefully sat down on the blanket. "I'm right sometimes." He continued to joke, leaning over to peer into the basket. "Oh dang, you really brought a lot."

“I wasn’t sure what you would like,” Cosette felt her cheeks flush, though she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to be embarrassed about. “I figured if we worked hard enough, we deserved a good reward.” She pulled out a grape and popped it into her mouth.

"I'm not too picky." Silas laughed, reaching in and taking a sandwich from the basket. "Heck, I've had to eat beans that were cooked in a can over a campfire like in the movies, almost anything beats that." He said as he unwrapped the sandwich, nodding at her comment, "we made a lot of progress," he agreed before taking a bite.

Cosette giggled, “Good to know, for the next time we have to work on the weekend here.” She joked, though figured they’d probably have to come out a few times to do something, and a picnic always made it better. She laughed at the idea of eating beans out of a can, “What were you doing to be eating beans out of a can?” She was curious, had a few ideas, camping came to the front of her mind, but she didn’t want to assume.

Silas chuckled, "if you keep providing food, I'll keep showing up to do the work," he joked, wondering if there would be more weekends like this. He didn't find himself dreading that idea too much. "Oh, we were moving cattle from one area to another, we used to make it an overnight trip, my dad always said we could live like our ancestors for the night," he chuckled with a shake of his head, "but he did compromise and let us bring our good tents and sleeping bags."

“I can definitely do that,” Cosette didn’t mind making and bringing food if it meant spending time with Silas. She wouldn’t admit that out loud, even if Aleah tried to bribe it out of her. She laughed at his story, having only been camping in an RV during her childhood, never a tent. “So, you could sleep comfortably, but eating as sill like your ancestors?”

"Sounds like a plan." Silas chuckled, figuring they were just playing around. He doubted someone like Cosette would really give him the time of day outside of work, especially after she got more adjusted to being in town and made more friends. "Yeah, pretty much," he laughed, "and more like my dad didn't want to freeze his ass off when he had a perfectly good tent sitting at home."

Cosette toyed with her drink, thinking about his answer, wondering if he’d like to meet up outside of work too. She didn’t want him to feel like he had to though, she just wanted a friend, though she enjoyed his company already too much, she was sure she’d fall instantly again. Her heart clearly hadn’t learned its lesson. “I can’t blame him, I wouldn’t want to freeze either.” She laughed, though the thought of a cold night with Silas brought warmth to her, and she couldn’t stop herself suddenly from asking, “Do you have any plans tomorrow night?” She asked, suddenly feeling the warm feeling turn a little lukewarm, and she worried about him saying he was busy, or rejecting her anyways.

Silas chewed on his food, content to munch away until there was nothing left as he decided that there wasn't any food better than the kind made by someone else who was actually good at it. He chuckled as he thought of his Dad, those trips pretty much forgotten since the passing of his brother but he still wished that some day they could go again, at least to honor his memory. He looked over at Cosette with his sandwich half way to his mouth when she asked him about the next night, "oh, no, I don't." he said, wondering if she had plans to do some work around the barn and would want some help.

Cosette focused on nibbling on a piece of cheese and cracker, feeling the hum from the heat of the sun shinning through the window, and her heart was racing again, and it felt like time had slowed before he replied. “Do you want to get a drink?” She thought about the bar downtown, she had seen it a few times, but was nervous going in by herself. She was sure if he’d want to go at all, but would he want to go with her? It’s been clear since the beginning that they were coworkers, butt maybe there was something else there.

"Oh," that definitely caught Silas off guard. Maybe she really did need some friends and he was the only one she had so far. He offered her a smile and nodded, "sure, that sounds look a good way to spend the time." He replied, thinking it would be nice doing something that didn't revolve around horses or cattle.

Cosette felt that ‘oh’ like a hoof kick to the stomach, wondering if he was trying to figure out how to let her down easy without hurting her feelings. Maybe he didn’t want to be friends, but she would just smile and ask Aleah out, at least then she could drown her sorrows. When he said sure, her entire demeanor changed, her smile returning, and she couldn’t help but feel relieved. “Great,” She hoped she didn’t sound so eager, but they could work out the details before leaving here. “So, do you not do the cattle thing anymore?” She asked, wondering if they didn’t have to take the cows to other locations anymore, or if there was another reason he didn’t do the overnight thing.

Something about her smile made Silas stop for a moment as his own lips curled up, already looking forward to that day. "We usually get it done in a day, we haven't done the overnight part in a long time." He said, smile slipping down slightly as a pang hit his chest.

Cosette pouted slightly when he said they could do it all in one day. “Aww, it seems fun to ride all day, see the surrounding scenery, camp under the stars.” She wasn’t sure about camping in a tent, but she would try, at least once. “Not sure how Estella would handle a night outside the barn.” She joked, though her horse hadn’t even done such a thing either.

"It was a lot of fun," Silas said, his smile returning as he thought about trying it again with the boys, having a feeling the twins and Sam would love it, maybe, if they were good enough, they could bring a couple friends along. He'd have to think about it. "I'm sure she'd be fine," he told Cosette, "especially with the horses hanging out."

“I could see her wondering where the cozy warmth of the barn was, and why there isn’t fresh hay on the ground.” Cosette joked, knowing she’d be a happy horse as long as she was fed. She reached for a sandwich from the basket at the same time as Silas, their fingers touched and for a split second, Cosette felt the urge to lace them together. However, before they could acknowledge their fingers touching, his phone rang in his pocket, causing the two of them to split suddenly.

Silas chuckled, "ah, so she's a princess." He joked, enjoying the moment but when their fingers touched it felt like his brain had forgotten how to work. His gaze flicked up to Cosette's but he was at a loss for words. Just as he seemed to find them his phone was wringing with the obnoxious song Reed had set as his ringtone. He pulled his hand away from hers and grabbed his phone, sliding the button up to answer and silencing 'Never Gonna Give You Up' as he asked Reed what was going on. As Reed spoke Silas frowned, shaking his head and slowly standing up. "Yeah, I'll be there, I told you two to be careful." He said before hanging up and looked over to Cosette with an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, I have to go, my son and nephew got their truck stuck out in the fields when they were trying to go mudding."

Cosette waited for Silas to finish the phone call, taking the sandwich she had originally been reaching for, but she lost her appetite, and started just nibbling on it. Her heart sank a little when he said he had to leave, but she reminded herself that they were hanging out tomorrow. “Trapped in he mud, sounds… Dirtty.” She giggled, trying to appear okay with the interruption, “You better go and save them.” At least they had found the information they had wanted, spent some time together, she thought as she started cleaning up the picnic.

Silas chuckled a little but still felt bad about having to end this little lunch, it had been nice to sit down and relax but of course that couldn't last. "It is, there goes having a clean truck for once." He joked, running a hand through his hair before getting down and helping her clean up the picnic. "Thanks again for bringing all of this, it was good."

Once everything was packed away, she set her basket on his desk, chuckling at how sad he seemed to be about his clean truck. “Guess you’ll have to punish them by cleaning it.” She teased, though that’s what her own dad had done when she’d raced off in the middle of the night, fallen in the mud, and called home crying. “I don’t mind at all. I’ll bring more the next weekend we work.” She was already planning different sandwiches to try, though she wasn’t sure when they’d work in here again.

Silas laughed, "good idea, they'll be busy cleaning their truck so what's another one." The boys babied their own vehicles enough that it made sense to use that as a form of punishment for interrupting his time with Cosette. "I'm already looking forward to it," he told her as he picked up his keys from where they sat on his desk. "I'll see you tomorrow though, I'll meet you at the bar?"
