“Can’t concentrate, can’t force it.” Shannon admitted, pulling out her phone to mess around on that instead, though she could just get up and leave, something kept her there. She was sure he was to blame for her not being able to concentrate, it was easier to blame him than her book hangover.

Reed nodded, he could get that, sometimes it was hard for him to concentrate, okay well, most of the time he found it hard to focus. He started to reel in his line, glancing at her again. "You want to try?" He asked though was already assuming what her answer would be, with an eyeroll and a scoff of course.

Shannon eyed Reed from the side at his offer, looking at the pole, then back to him. “I think I’m good, no need to embarrass myself,” She already felt embarrassed that he had called out the tear staining on her face, but she also didn’t see the point. “You can fish for the both of us.” She joked.

"Embarrass yourself?" Reed repeated, looking over at her, "it's fishing, it's pretty hard to do that." He said but looked back at the water as he cast out his line again, not feeling up to arguing when there were fish at stake.

Shannon could list a few ways she could embarrass herself fishing, even if he said it was hard to do that. She watched as he sent out the cast again, wondering if he even ate the fish he caught, or just threw them back in. “Still possible.” She said as she went back to her phone, but she found herself scrolling at nothing on Tik Tok.

Reed rolled his eyes, "the embarrassing thing is not trying without a good reason." He said to her as he watched the line, continuing to stand on the shore instead of sitting down. He looked out at the water, watching as a large fish jumped in the distance as if it were taunting him.

Shannon shrugged, “Not for me,” She didn’t agree, she knew her mother would disagree, and that thought made her almost pick up the fishing pole. She shook her head, removing all thoughts of the person she unfortunately had to call her only family, and she stood up abruptly. “I’m… I’ll be back.” She left her bag and her books, figuring Reed wouldn’t leave his fishing pole, and started walking along the edge of the pond, needing to get her mother out of her mind, though that wasn’t always easy.

Reed raised an eyebrow, shaking his head at her but she could do whatever she wanted. If she didn't want to step out of her comfort zone then that was on her. He refocused on fishing, hoping he'd get something eventually, his uncle had said there was a smile fire pit that had been built by students over the years, explaining that no matter how many times he had taken it down it ended up getting rebuilt. When Shannon spoke again he grunted in response, not really expecting her to come back but when he noticed she had left her bag and books he figured she had some sort of plan to return. As she walked along the pond he glanced towards her for a moment before looking back at the water.

Shannon felt her phone vibrate in her hand, and checked the screen, grimacing at the fact her mother somehow knew when she entered her thoughts. She stuffed her phone into her sports bra and forged ahead, wanting to put distance from Reed. She didn’t want to get attached, she didn’t have a choice while her mom was in charge of her finances. She shook her head as she made her way to the other side of the pond, stopping when she heard something. She looked around, slowly walking towards what started to sound like a kitten, and it sounded pretty close, but she couldn’t see it. She scanned the trees and the ground around her, not spotting any movement as the kitten continued to cry. Shannon finally spotted the little guy in the pond itself, covered in mud, and barely hanging on. “Shit.” She sighed as she headed towards the edge, knowing she could just buy a new pair of boots, and pants, even if she really didn’t want to get wet.

Reed reeled in his line, knowing he was being impatient but it was like he couldn't stop himself. He had just got the line in when he glanced towards Shannon, hearing her voice echo across the water. His gaze narrowed slightly, "you okay over there?" He called over to her.

Shannon ignored Reed as she pulled her hair back into a high ponytail, rolling up her sleeves and dipped one foot into the pond. She squealed slightly at how cold it was but bit her tongue hoping the kitten hadn’t been in the pond long. She took a few more steps, the cold water soaking her boots as she found herself ankle deep in mud. Thank goodness the kitten was in arms reach, “Here we go kitty.” She reached down and grabbed the kitten by the scruff. The poor thing was covered in mud, though surprisingly its eyes were bright and clear, and a very pretty blue. “Hello little thing.” She whispered, pulling the kitten to her chest, feeling it shiver against her.

Reed frowned as she got ready to go into the water. Without thinking he set down his rod on the shore and walked over to her as she started to walk into the water. His eyes widened slightly, "hey! Be careful, that stuff will seriously suck you in." He warned but paused when he saw her holding a kitten, a frown crossed his face but his eyes were filled with concern, "he was stuck out there?" He called over to her.

Shannon rolled her eyes when he called out to her, though as she tried trudging back to shore, she found her right boo stuck in the mud. “Shit, weren’t fucking kidding.” She muttered loudly, holding the shivering kitten to her body as she looked up at Reed. “Can you help me? Take the kitten.” She didn’t want to, feeling the kitten purring against her chest had her wanting to just cuddle up with it instead, but it wouldn’t survive if she couldn’t get him out of the pond.

Reed stood at the edge, looking at a few rocks that were big enough to step on to avoid the mud to figure out the best way to get to her. He looked back at Shannon when she asked for help, hesitating slightly. He shook his head and stepped on the rocks, edging as far as he could and held out his hands to her. "Hold the kitten and lean towards me so I can grab your elbows."

Shannon was going to hold the little kitten out to him when he suggested she lean towards him. “LEAN?” She asked, feeling like that involved getting closer to him than she wanted to, and she could already feel her foot slipping out of her boot. She was going to lose it, and while she would cry about it, she was already going to go shopping for the little guy. She huffed slightly before leaning forward, holding the kitten close to keep it from falling, though it seemed to have stop crying and was just purring into her chest. “Please don’t drop me.” She whispered as she closed her eyes, waiting for her to fall face first into the mud.

"Yes, lean." Reed told her, eyes narrowing slightly as he got ready for her to argue with him but thankfully she agreed to his orders. "I would never drop you." He told her, glancing into her eyes before grabbing her elbows, steadying his stance as he started to pull. He frowned a little as pain shot up his back but he ignored it as he pulled on her. The second the mud loosen its grip on her he gave another tug, grunting slightly. Without a sucking sound the mud finally let go, sending Reed stumbling back with Shannon in his arms but was able to catch himself enough that they didn't fall over on the rocks.

Shannon kept her eyes closed, despite the sudden need to stare at him, wondering why he sounded like Aladin with the whole ‘Do you trust me’ shit saying he wouldn’t drop her. She grimaced as he pulled, feeling her foot slowly give, her heart dying a little when she realized her boot would be left behind. There was a sound before her boot finally gave and sent the two of them stumbling onto shore. Thankfully she held the kitten close, as Reed held onto her, his arms didn’t move even after she was safely out of the mud, and she didn’t want to admit she didn’t want to leave it. “My shoe.” She said mournfully into his chest, wanting to force herself to say something instead of wanting to snuggle up next to him.

Reed held her tight until he was sure that she was steady on her feet and let her go, glancing towards the water when she mentioned her shoe. "Hold on." He said, seeing that the top of her boot was still clear of the water. He got down on his knees, reaching out for the boot but couldn't reach, a frown crossing his face. There was no way he was going to be able to get it without getting wet. He stood, removing his boots and socks then rolled up his pant legs then, without giving himself a chance to think twice he stepped into the water, grimacing as the mud squelched between his toes but didn't say anything as he walked over to her boot, grabbed it was both hands and yanked it out of the water. His feet sunk into the mud but he turned, walking back over to the rocks where Shannon was standing on. "Here."

It was strange, being held for so long, seeing as the only time her mother showed any affection was in front of people and cameras. It was terrifying that she didn’t want him to let go, devastating when he did. She forced herself to look down at the kitten again, brushing off the mud from its fur and finding that the fur was black underneath. “Dorian.” She whispered, knowing the gender might be wrong, but if it was a boy, that was the name. She turned to find Reed without boots and his jeans rolled up, wadding into get her boots, and the image sent a shiver up her spine. No one usually went out of their way for her, unless they wanted money, or something else. She was sure he’d want something, a date probably, which was why she stared at him with narrowed eyes as he walked back, holding out the boot for her. “Thanks…” She said softly, taking it from him, wondering if she should ask him what he wanted or he would tell her.

Reed looked back at her, raising an eyebrow when he saw that she was practically glaring at him. What the hell had he done? He'd helped her. He frowned a little but nodded, "I don't know if it got wet inside but you could probably lay it on the rocks and it'll be fine in a bit. How's the kitten?" He asked, looking down at the little thing to see that it was shaking. "I have a sweatshirt in my backpack we can wrap him in." He told her, bending down and picking up his shoes and socks.

Shannon investigated her shoe, noticing a good amount of water, and tilted it over to pour it out. “Not the worst,” She commented, having been tossed into a pool at a party before, but she didn’t plan to do anything like that again. “That would be great. Need to see if a Vet around here has an opening.” She started to hop slightly, struggling to put her foot in her boot, even if it was soaking wet, she planned to change before the appointment, hoping there was one today.

Reed frowned slightly, surprised that she was so willing to put the boot on. He didn't hesitate to reach out, resting his hands on her shoulders to steady her so she could put on her boot. "If you can't find a vet there's one that comes to my uncles farm and to the school who usually answers whenever we call." He offered, "he specializes in horses but I'm sure he knows a thing or two about cats."

Shannon stiffened at his hand on her shoulder, hesitating to put her boot on, waiting for the nails to start digging through her shirt and into her skin, but she knew he wasn’t going to hurt her like her mom usually did. “I’ll take that into consideration,” She finally got her boot on and stood up, grimacing at the cold feeling in her boots, and groaned at the squishy sound they made when she took a step. “Well, thanks for the help.” She said as if it wasn’t a big deal, even if it slightly was to her, but she didn’t think he’d want to go into town with her to a vet and the pet store, since he had come out to fish.

Reed glanced down at her, feeling her stiffen but didn't say anything, letting her go when she was finally steady but grimaced slightly when he heard her shoes. "Are you going to wear those when you go to find a vet?" He asked her as he started to walk to where their stuff was. He grabbed his backpack from the floor, taking out the sweatshirt and holding it out to her for the kitten.

“Absolutely not,” Shannon rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t blame him for thinking that. “I’m changing first,” She explained as she took the sweatshirt from him, wrapping the little guy with it, hoping it would warm him up. She walked over to her own backpack and stuffed her books inside before slinging it onto her shoulders. “And if, I can’t find a vet,” She bit her lower lip at the thought of having to come back and ask Reed for more help. “I’ll come find you.” She figured he’d still be here fishing.

Reed nodded slowly, "uh huh, have fun sneaking him into the dorm." He said, wondering if an RA would really care, he'd seen a lot of kids get away with staff plus he'd pushed the limits sometimes too. He was about to offer to go with her but then something caught his eye, "what-" he turned to face the pond, seeing his fishing pole floating in the dead center. "What the fuck?" He groaned, raking a hand through his hair as he watched his prize rod bob along in the water as if it was taunting him, "so much for fishing." He muttered.

Shannon hadn’t thought about how to get him into the dorms, but he was small enough she could hide him in her backpack. Just as long as he didn’t cry out it would work out. She was about to turn to find Hades, when she heard him groan, turning to find him searching for something. Her eyes followed where he was looking into the pond and spotted his fishing rod floating in the water. She grimaced, feeling a little bad that he lost his rod, but her mother’s voice slithered its way into her brain and said it was his own fault. “Guess you should have reeled in,” The words were out of her mouth before she could stop and think about it. “Want to help me then?” She offered, wondering why the fuck she was doing such a thing. She was beginning to see her lack of control over what she said was going to haunt her later.

Reeds eyes snapped over to Shannon when he heard her comment, eyes narrowed as frustration licked at the back of his neck. "I would have but I wanted to come help you out first." He grumbled, shaking his head then he remembered some advice from his dad: he could either stay mad and let it ruin his day or he could accept his luck and try to do better. He sighed, "I'll just get another one," he muttered and started to pack up his stuff but stopped when he heard her offer, looking over at her, "you want me to?"

Shannon turned to face Hade, pretending she was checking his bridle, hiding her face because she was afraid, he’d be able to tell that she was lying, “Not really, but I’m trying to be nice after you lost your little rod.” She was feeling a little guilty about that since he had come to save her, the fact that he hadn’t dropped her in the mud, and his words whispering through her mind had her face and neck flushing bright red. She was glad she had the excuse of pulling her reigns over Hade’s head to keep her attention away from Reed.

Reed frowned as he packed up what he had, standing up and slinging his back pack over his shoulders. "So it's out of pity?" He responded, not sure how he felt about that, actually, by the heat that was present on his neck and not from the sun he was starting to understand that he was irritated by it. He'd had enough pity from the hospital and people in his hometown anow with someone else pitying him he felt like he wanted to yell. "I don't need you to feel bad for me," he started, trying to keep his voice even, "either you want me involved or not. Don't pretend." He turned to look for his horse but as he moved he jumped back a little, finding Trigger at his side, leaning forward and nosing his shoulder.
