"Ah but then would you still help with decorating?" She teased but was curious about how good his baking skills were and wondered if she'd ever know. "Close enough." She teased, pushing some of her hair back and tucking it behind her ear. "So...you were going to play basketball before you got into this mess?"

Brody thought for a moment, “No? Only because if I had to pick decorating a gym versus a cake, the cake wins.” He chuckled lightly, knowing he’d be better at dealing with a cake than making sure the gym looked nice, but he could only shrug to himself at the work they had left behind. “Oh, just going to shoot some hoops. Everyone else was off having fun.” Though he partly just didn’t know where the guys were, he had hoped one or two would have been at the gym, made sense why they avoided it.

"Exactly." Maya replied, "and I'd need your streamer hanging skills for sure." She teased but at least she didn't have to worry about that, it wasn't like she was going to get involved in any type of dance planning. Besides, with the extra tutoring she was going to need to be doing and violin practice it wasn't like she had a lot of time to dedicate to much else. "Well maybe tomorrow you'll be able to actually play, or, well, maybe you should still avoid the gym so you don't get pulled into the clean up crew." She joked.

“Nah, I’m sure there’s someone else that could do it better than I could.” Brody figured there was someone at least smarter at putting streamers up, but it wasn’t his fault no one brought a ladder. He had no plans on helping decorate in the future, unless it was a cake of course. “I’ll avoid it for at least three days, but I am heartbroken.” He joked, putting his hand on his chest as if it really pained him that he couldn’t shoot the basketball around.

Maya rolled her eyes but smiled, "well you did good enough today." She told him with a smile but quickly laughed at his joke, shaking her head. "Maybe you can use one of the outdoor basketball courts?" She offered, having to pass by one of them when she headed to the music hall for practice but rarely did she pay attention to who might have been using them.

“I probably will, mostly likely will be crowded since the gym is… Occupied,” Brody wondered if that’s where his brother was, but he was feeling too full to do anything other than take a nap. “I might just pass out right there.” He chuckled, putting his head on the table, and snoring as if he really was asleep.

Maya blinked in surprise when he put his head down and started to snore, her eyes widening a little as they darted around the lunch room but there was hardly anyone else around and whoever was there wasn't paying attention to them. She suddenly felt awkward, not knowing if she was supposed to stay or if she should go. Her lower lip caught between her teeth, it didn't feel like leaving was a good idea. She leaned forward a little as she looked at him, "that...can't be comfortable."

“It’s not,” Brody said, but he didn’t lift his head for a few minutes before rising again. “So, what grade are you?” He hadn’t seen her in any of his classes, but there were several different classes with other Sophomores he hadn’t met. He couldn’t believe how big this school was, because it made it seem small on the website.

Maya jumped slightly and leaned back as he sat up, trying to act like she was calm, cool, and collected, not a bundle of nerves that was lacking social skills needed outside of partying or playing her role in her friend group. "Oh, I'm a freshman, you?" She asked.

“Ah, explains why I haven’t met you before, Sophomore.” Brody thought about his old school, his friends back home, “It’s my first year here too though.” He added quickly, knowing he felt just as nervous and worried about this place too, including their fellow students.

"Oh yeah," Maya smiled a bit sheepishly, grateful that they at least had been able to meet when she was on her own, she didn't need Morgan saying anything nasty. Sometimes she wondered why she was even friends with the brutish redhead but then she remembered: she didn't fit in with anyone else and part of her role to her aunt and uncle was to be what they envisioned as the perfect 'daughter'. "It's kind of intimidating being the new kid, but at least you aren't the only one." She smiled, glad that she at least had her sister at the time but now they weren't talking that much, for a reason that Maya didn't understand why.

“It is intimidating, I can’t believe put that much pressure on a kid.” Brody partially joked, knowing it was avoidable at times, but he felt like he and Blake had a choice. Yet here they were, hours away from mom in the hospital. “My brother’s here too, so at least I’m not completely alone, but they didn’t room us together.” That was something he thought was strange, but the school said it was to help them find friends in their new roommates, which I guess worked.

"No kidding, it's got me feeling like Luisa from Encanto." She joked but felt a little awkward, hoping he'd get the joke but there was a chance that he hadn't seen the movie, which was too bad, it was one of her favorites. "They separated me and my sister too," she rolled her eyes, kind of missing sharing a space with her sister but if they had to be separated then apparently that's how it had to be for now.

“We don’t talk about Bruno,” Brody chuckled, having watched the movie multiple times just to sing that one song, except he and his brother always replaced the name with each other’s. He made a face when she said she and her sister had been separated, “So dumb, I’d rather have a room with my brother than someone I don’t know, but so far it hasn’t been that big of a deal.” He shrugged, finding his roommates got a long with his brothers, so they were just a big group of dudes.

Maya giggled, her face lighting up with a smile from his response and nodded quickly. "Exactly." She said, glad that he knew what she was talking about. She nodded in agreement, "yeah, it's weird not being with her, but so far it's been okay...though I don't know my roommates that well still." She said, finding both of them a little hard to talk to so she avoided hanging out in the common space most of the time.

Brody frowned when she said she didn’t know her roommates well, “Haven’t had like, a girl’s night all together?” He’d heard a few girls in his class talk about doing that in their dorm rooms, something like movie night, similar to what he and Denver did, though they just played video games.

Maya shook her head, "no...they aren't really...friendly." She grimaced a little, at least Stormy didn't seem friendly, she wasn't too sure about Hazel but Maya had resigned herself to just being friends with Morgan and Victoria now. "Besides, Stormy is gone every weekend and I barely see Hazel." She shrugged.

“That’s too bad, maybe you could ask for new roommates?” Brody wasn’t sure how that would go, since when he and Blake had tried rooming together, they had said no, but that was for a different reason apparently. He slowly nodded his head when she mentioned names as if he knew them, which he didn’t, but that wasn’t a big deal. “Gone every weekend?” He asked, wondering how she was able to do that. Even when their dad visited, he’d stay in a hotel, so he and Blake often stayed at the school.

Maya shrugged, "it's okay, the years still young." She said with a slight smile, figuring she'd just focus on her own friends and things could change next year when she was sent back with her sister. "Yeah, I guess she's from here so she goes and see's her parents on the weekend." She explained, reaching up and brushing her hair out of her face. It didn't make much of a difference to her though because on those weekends she was usually out and about, going to parties or was out shopping.

Brody thought about what she could do that might make her roommates a little more friendly, “Well, if the three of you like the same movie genre, why not try and have a movie night?” he suggested, thinking at least that way they didn’t have to talk that much, the movie could do most of it. He slowly nodded his head, “That makes a lot of sense.” More sense than trying to stay over at a hotel with his dad when he visited.

Maya considered the idea and nodded, "that could work...I could get some snacks and maybe get some blankets to be more comfy." She said thoughtfully, unsure if she'd actually do it but it may be something to try and if it was a bust with her roommates she could probably get her sister or her friends to join her instead. She was about to say something when her phone vibrated, a frown crossed her face as she took out her phone, seeing a message from Morgan and her throat tightened a little. "Oh, I didn't realize what time it was, I have to go get ready for the dance."

Brody opened his mouth to add something, but stopped himself when her phone went off, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” He chuckled, thinking at least it wasn’t spent in the gym, “Right, makes no sense why they started decorating before today.” Though they might have other things to do before, and he hoped they got it done in time, realizing they had basically left them to finish it. “I hope you have fun, you can take complete credit of the design.” He added, thinking she could show up her friends if they liked it, beam with pride.

"Apparently." Maya half smiled, wondering if he was just saying that to be nice, she had enjoyed their time, it had been chill enough. She tucked her phone into her pocket before looking over at Brody, tilting her head, "you're not gonna go?"

“Honestly, didn’t even know it was happening,” Brody wasn’t sure if it was because the school didn’t advertise it well, or he’d just didn’t pay attention well enough. He was going to assume it was the latter, “I’ll catch the next dance, promise.” He teased with a big smile, planning to pay more attention to the school events.

Maya couldn't stop herself from pouting a little when he said he wasn't going but she understood that some people didn't want to do those things. "Aw, okay, maybe I'll see you then." She said, unable to help herself from returning his smile with one of her own.

Brody thought for a second, before pulling out his phone, figuring it was nice and polite, especially if she always had left over food he could eat. “Text me if you get caught decorating again, I’ll help bail you out.” He joked, holding out his unlocked phone for her to take.

Maya looked at him, a bit surprised by his offer kept her smile, "sounds like a plan." She replied as she took her phone and added in her number then handed the phone back to him. "And text me if....you need bailed out for something, unless it's like, actual bail for jail." She giggled.

“Aww, you wouldn’t bail me out of jail?” Brody asked, putting his hand over his chest as if that really wounded him, though he understood why she wouldn’t, and he hoped he wouldn’t actually end up in jail needing to be bailed out. “Don’t worry, that’s my older bro’s job.” He joked, knowing he and Blake were twins, he still was born technically second.

"Because I barely know you, you could be a...criminal master mind and I'd have no clue." She laughed, but really, if anyone called her and needed help she'd find a way, even if the person was someone she hardly knew. She liked to help and was in a place where, for the most part, she was in the position where she could.

Brody blinked a few times at her and then slowly nodded his head, “I completely understand that, but what if I was innocent?” he asked, getting up from the booth and grabbing their trays. “Are you going to let me rot?” He teased, taking the trays over to the trash before sending them to the washroom on a conveyor belt.
