Jessie stared down at the F on her paper, the one she'd worked hard on for the last several days. Of course she could have probably done a better job, but she felt like an F was necessary. She crumbled up her homework, even though she'd need it so she could take the teachers notes and rewrite it so she could at least get a better grade. "Guess I'll have to cut back on my blog." She muttered to herself as she slowly uncrumpled her paper to the best of her ability, smoothing it out at the picnic table in the courtyard she'd sat down immediately after school had let out. She wasn't feeling homework though, even though she should get started on it, and strangely she wasn't in the mood for any of her podcasts, or true crime shows. She was feeling a bit down in the dumbs about this stupid grade.

Jake headed across the court yard, ready to chuck his backpack in his truck and head up to the barn to go for a ride, he'd been busy with homework the last couple of days and felt like he'd been neglecting his horse lately so he figured he could spend some extra time today to get him out and about. He was so focused on his task that he nearly missed out on a familiar but sad looking face sitting at one of the picnic tables. He immediately stopped, adjusting course and walked over to Jessie, stopping in front of her table and flashing a smile. "Hey there sunshine, you okay?" He asked with a tilt of his head.

Jessie was about to get up to go stare at her ceiling in her dorm room, when a more interesting view came before her. "Hi, I'm just dealing with this F." She frowned, showing him the crumpled up paper with the giant red F at the top. "Kind of feeling meh." she admitted, not feeling the desire to do much, though she was happy that he stopped to talk to her.

"An F?" Jake repeated with a frown that turned into a grimace when he saw her crumpled up paper. "Oh shit, I'm sorry Jess, but if it counts that teacher is...tough, I don't think anyone has gotten an A in their class without a battle." He said, mind racing as to how to make things better for her. "Do you want to come for a ride with me?" He asked her, not sure if she'd agree but he wanted to try something.

Jessie nodded solemnly, hating to admit she failed at something, though it really wasn’t that big of a deal since she was being given the chance to rewrite for a better grade. "I mean, to be fair… I spent more time on my blog then the paper." She couldn't stop her innocent smile from growing on her face, knowing she could have prevented it, but an F was still harsh in her opinion. "But that makes me feel… A little better I guess." If people had to battle for A's with this teacher, she might have to pause the blog till she passed it. She perked up when he asked if she wanted to come ride with him, "Like… On a horse?" She asked, feeling excited and nervous at the same time, wanting to spend time with Jake, but she also hadn't dealt with horses too often. She wasn't going to let him know she was nervous, she never let anyone know she was scared, she couldn't.

Jake nodded slowly, "I guess you just have to find a balance between your school and blog." He said with a little chuckle, not one to judge her, he saved those feelings for his brothers antics that typically got them in trouble. "Yeah on a horse," he said with a smile. "we can't go ride a bull. Well, I mean, I can, but you can't or at least shouldn't." He said with a slight grimace, he wouldn't want her anywhere near a bull, even if it wasn't one primed for the rodeo scene.

Jessie groaned at the thought of putting her blog to the side, even though she knew it was necessary, but she still didn't like it. "I'd rather just not do homework." She admitted, knowing she'd need an education before joining the police force like her dad, and hoped to be a detective one day. "First of all, I don't want to ride a bull," She chuckled, not planning on getting herself several injured or worse, "Second, it could have been about your truck." She pointed out, her cheeks flushing with the memory of the last time in his truck, and how they had almost kissed, at least she thought they were about to.

"Well, that's not an option until you graduate, unless you decide too go to college." He chuckled a little, still not sure what path he would take, knowing it would be easy to take the rodeo route and make bank that way and if that didn't work out he could work at his dads ranch but neither of those meant he took school any less seriously. "Well, we do need to take the truck to get up to the barn," he chuckled, "then I can get Buck ready and we can hit a trail."

Jessie blew air into her bangs like Ariel from the Little Mermaid does and rolled her eyes. "Of course I can't just start now," She sighed with defeat, though looked up at him with a smile. "Alright. I've never ridden a horse before." She admitted, feeling just a little worried, but her dad had worked with horses on the force before, so she'd have to at least try.

Jake returned her smile with a big one of his own. "C'mon then, put all your stuff in you back pack and we can go for a ride to forget about it all for a while." He told her as he held out his hand in offering to get going, not wanting to get stuck outside after the sun fell below the horizon.

Jessie didn't hesitate to stuff her paper into her bag, zipping it close before turning back to Jake, and taking his hand. She wondered briefly, if she could just keep holding his hand, would he let go first? She instead decided to slowly let go of his hand, finger by finger, hooking her pointer finger so it would catch on his. "Are we… Riding doubles?" She asked, remembering the word when she was trying to brush up on Rodeo knowledge.

Jake tried to hide his disappointment when her hand left his but he could find some contentment in the fact that their fingers still hung together as he lead her towards the parking lot where his truck was. "That's the plan, I don't want to risk you getting hurt if you rode on your own without experience." He told her as he looked over at her.

Jessie bit her lower lip for a few seconds as she tried to keep herself from grinning when he didn't unhook their fingers. She hoped that meant he would be totally fine with holding her hand, maybe even on this ride, as they rode doubles. "Alright, I mean. Thank you for your concern," She smirked, her mind racing through how they would actually sit in the saddle together. "Does Buck do well with doubles?" She wanted to ask if she'd sit in front of him or behind him in the saddle, but immediately changed her mind and asked about his horse instead.

Jake chuckled softly, "Buckshot is a great horse, very tolerant and he doesn't mind riding doubles." He told her, letting their hands swing back and forth as they walked until they got to his truck and he opened up the passenger side door for her.

"Alright, if you say so," Jessie smiled, knowing he knew his horse best probably, "How long have you and Buckshot been a pair?" She asked, wondering if he had Buckshot as a colt, maybe even trained him himself. She slipped into the passenger seat, placing her backpack on the floorboards, and then buckled herself in out of habit. No matter how far she had to drive she always buckled in.

"Since he was born," Jake gave her a big smile before getting in the drivers side and starting up the truck. "I learned to ride on with his Mom so the second my dad told me she was going to have a foal I knew I had to be there." He said, knowing some people might find it weird but he was excited to help out as much as he was allowed. He buckled himself up and drove out to the barn. "My Dad wanted us to know every part of the ranch life and get involved."

"Awwww, that's so cute." Jessie instantly imagined a little Jake with a little foal, training it, learning to ride, though she didn't know how old he was when Buck was born. "How old is Buck? How long do horses even live?" She figured they lived a good amount, but was it longer than a dog or a cat? "Do you want to run the ranch?" She wondered if he wanted to take over or even run a ranch of his own one day.

Jake chuckled softly, taking a moment before answering her questions. "Buck is about six now and horses live up to 30 years, sometimes more, I think it just depends on health and breed." He replied, not wanting to think about the day where he'd lose Buck. "Um," he paused at her last question, "yeah, it's either going to be more or Reed or the both of us sharing. I'm not really sure what else I'd do besides compete in the rodeos but I can't do that forever."

Jessie's mouth dropped open in shock, "Thirty years!" She really couldn't believe it, she didn't think such a big animal could live that long. She smiled, knowing then that Jake would get to have his horse for a long time. "Well, you could raise carrier pigeons." She teased, smirking as she watched they pulled onto the road from the parking lot to the barn, a path she didn't think she'd ever take before today.

"Yeah, thirty years." Jake chuckled but that turned into a deep laugh when she talked about raising carrier pigeons. "Don't tempt me, I might do that." He teased her back as he easily reversed into the spot that he always claimed for his own and shut off his truck. He hopped out and went to her side, opening the door for her. "You can leave your stuff in here, no one will mess with it."

"Wow." Still a little bit in shock about that, till he said he might actually do that, a smile coming to her face. "Who would you train them to fly to?" Jessie asked, feeling her heart speed up, not sure why it mattered who it was. Maybe it was his family, or a friend. She watched him walk around from the driver side to hers, hitting the button on her belt buckle and let it slide back. "I assume it's all students and employees at this barn." It didn't make sense for an outside to be there, unless invited by someone on campus. She placed her bag on the floorboards, eyeing it once more before sliding out the door and shutting it behind her.

"Well," Jake said with a tilt of his head, "they'll know how to get home but maybe my uncle and brother, then anyone else who'd want a message." He said, looking over at her thoughtfully. "Yeah, just students and people who work here." He confirmed, locking up the truck and stuffing his keys into his pocket before heading inside the barn, opening the door for her.

Jessie wasn't sure how pigeon's worked, but part of her dropped a little when he mentioned family, despite the fact she knew that would have been the more logical answer. "Ah, see. I don't know how they actually work." She grimaced at her honesty, but it was the truth and there wasn't a point in lying. She followed him towards the barn, taking it all in, "This is a nice stable." She admitted, wondering how long ago the place was built, the place even had air conditioning.

"I don't either, but they're used to send messages so...how hard can it be to figure out? Maybe I'll set aside a pigeon just for you." He smiled at her, a bit of teasing flashing in his eyes. "It is really nice," he agreed, "my uncle Silas is the Western Riding instructor here and takes pride in keeping it clean." He explained as he lead her through the stables until finally reaching his horse, giving Jessie another smile, "and this is my boy Buckshot." He said as the horse poked his head out, looking at Jessie curiously.

Jessie felt her cheeks flush a little when he said he'd set aside a pigeon for her. "Well, until that day, we'll just have to use the stuffed pigeon." Though she hadn't seen it since the rodeo, she assumed Jake had it set up in his room somewhere. She nodded her head, remembering he mentioned something about his uncle working here, lived her, something to that extent. She pulled out her phone and made quick notes, one about his uncle, the barn, and one about his horse named Buckshot. She looked up when they came to a stop at a stall, finding herself face to face with a horse. "Awww, he's adorable." She said, holding out a flat hand, wishing she had something like a carrot or a sugar cube to give.

"Yup, but I don't want to hit you in the head with it." He teased, knowing the pigeon was back in his room, perched on one of his bookshelves where it would be safe but he was kicking himself for not bringing it along...but then again he hadn't planned on seeing Jessie. His gaze softened as he watched Buckshot reach out, nosing Jessie's hand curiously. "I'll get him ready and we can head out." He told her before heading back to the tack room.

Jessie laughed and shook her head, "I would say I was sorry, but it was your brother, so that's fine." She teased, knowing she could laugh about it now, but at first she had felt really bad that she hadn't hit the right target, though she was still a little surprised he was a twin. "Alright." She said, watching him head off to another room, and she found herself looking back to Buckshot. "It's my first time riding, sorry you got a newbie today." She teasingly said, offering her hand once again to Buckshot, who sniffed and nibbled her hand with his lips.

Jake laughed from deep in her chest, "exactly, Reed can get all the beating with the pigeon." He joked before busying himself with getting the tack and brought it out to Buckshot, gaze softening when he saw his horse nibbling on her hand. "Buck'll be fine, he just likes being outside." He told her as he carefully opened the stall door annd started to get his horse ready.

Jessie watched as he opened the stall door and started setting up the saddle, leaning against the open stall doorway. "When you aren't riding, what else are you doing?" She asked, wondering if he liked amusement parks, or movies, maybe he'd want to see a movie.

Jake looked over at Jessie briefly when she asked her question, "uh, I don't mind going to parties or going on drives. Sometimes I go out to my uncles or I'm hanging out with my brother or cousin." He said and smiled a bit sheepishly, "I'm not that exciting of a person really."
