Cosette set her purse on her desk and flipped on the light, looking around her classroom. It was weird still, to think she was going to be actually teaching high school students. She walked around the room, having one more box of books for Silas to bring in, and she couldn’t stop the smile form on her face at the little joke she had waiting for him. She looked over the few tables she had in the room, she also had an area you could relax in, figuring she wasn’t always going to have something to go over, with how little she was given work with, but she was new, and didn’t mind taking it easy. She actually made it work that her English riding class spent more time in the barn, wanting to ride Estella as much as possible, and maybe catch sight of someone. Cosette walked back to her desk, taking a seat as she waited for her meeting with Aleah, hoping it would go well.

Late late late, of all days of course today was the one where she had to be late. Aleah cursed to herself as she pulled off her leather jacket and her helmet, balancing them on the seat of her bike as she ran a hand through her hair, hopping to add some volume to fend off the inevitable helmet hair. She checked herself in the mirror of her bike before heading into the building where Cosette's classroom was, cursing at herself again but this time for her outfit. It wasn't exactly the most professional but she had told the new hire to dress casually since it was still summer. She grumbled a little but as Cosette's classroom came into view she took a deep breath and went to the open door, knocking on the frame before poking her head in and smiling, "Cosette? Sorry I'm so late, I was having car trouble, I'm Aleah." She said as she walked inside, holding out her hand but stopped, looking around the transformed class room. "Wow...you're room looks amazing!"

Cosette looked at her watch and wondered if she’d gotten the time wrong. Was she early? Was she too late? She started to worry she wrote down the wrong date when someone knocked and then poked their head in. She smiled when the woman walked in and introduced herself, “Bonjour madame Aleah,” She took her hand and shook it, looking around her room, feeling her cheeks flush with the compliment. “Merci, I was bored this summer.” She had a lot of time, though she either spent it working on the classroom or riding Estella, since she didn’t know the town well, she rarely left her place after dark.

Aleah smiled as they shook hands, "it's good to finally meet you face to face Cosette, those phone and video interviews never really do the person justice." It was easy for someone to put up a front through the phone but in person it was a bit more difficult for someone to hide their true self. "It all looks really good, I'm sure the students will love how comfortable it feels," she said about the room, some people criticized her leniency with her job but as long as students were learning she didn't see the point in being overbearing to her employees. "You certainly brought a lot of stuff here with you, it must have been exhausting moving it all."

“Oh, merci again,” Cosette wasn’t sure she was going to be able to stop her face from being red forever, but she felt her face cool a little. “You are, uh, just as beautiful, yes.” She felt intimidated a little, having such a pretty woman as a principal, but she was sure she wouldn’t have her job if she didn’t earn it. “Oh, most of these I bought here, in the states.” In fact, she brought very little from France, only the necessities, storing most of her things at her grandparents.

Aleah felt her face heat up, she hadn't just meant in terms of looks but wasn't going to correct Cosette. "Well thank you, mind if I sit down so we can chat for a bit? I like to get to know everyone just a bit before the school year starts." She explained, it also gave her something to do instead of wallowing around her empty house like a ghost and facetiming her various family members. "But still, it all had to get carried up to this room somehow, that must've been rough."

Cosette nodded and motioned for her to take a seat as she did the same at her desk, feeling slightly nervous suddenly about this. Would she be allowed to stay and teach? She wasn’t sure what she would do if things went south so quickly after everything that had happened back home. “Oh, I had some help with that.” She smiled, remembering how Silas had been nice enough to help her after they had gone for a ride.

Aleah sat down across from Cosette, setting her jacket and her helmet down on the floor by her feet. She took a moment to look Cosette up and down, noting a slight tightness in her posture and smiled, "don't be nervous, we're off the clock, I just figured we could talk for a bit." She smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear and looked at Cosette curiously, "that's good you got some help, have you met Silas yet? He's the western riding teacher you'll be sharing the barn with."

Cosette smiled, but only a little bit of the tension she felt melted away. This wasn’t like when she rode for a competition, where she was a little nervous, but she knew what she was doing. Teaching was a whole different competition she felt she wasn’t ready for. “Oh yes, I met him at the barn the first day here.” She willed her face not to turn bright red, but she was sure her cheeks turned a little hot. "He's the one who actually helped me carry the boxes in." she admitted.

Aleah was about to move on to other questions but she manage to catch the faint redness on Cosette's cheeks and her eyebrow raised, "oh yeah? And what do you think of him?" She asked with a teasing smile, wondering if Cosette would relax and talk to her casually or would try to stay professional. "Think you guys can...get along?"

“Oh, um, yes we should be able to get along,” Cosette forced herself to act professional about it. She and Silas were coworkers, she had just left Henri only eight months ago, she shouldn’t be thinking about a relationship of any sort outside of coworkers and friendship. “He’s really nice and funny though, so it’s not hard to like him.” She added quickly, wanting to avoid this subject.

Aleah's eyes narrowed a bit as Cosette spoke, having a feeling there might be more behind what she was saying. "Yeah...Silas is a pretty likeable guy, kind of like a cowboy prince charming." She offered, hoping that Cosette might take the bait and say something about Silas that would be interesting.

Cosette had to look away as Aleah looked at her, feeling like she was boring into her soul, stripping everything away, exposing the lies and truths she held. “Yeah, I guess you could say that,” she eyed her boss from the side at the mention of the so-called cowboy prince charming. “I wouldn’t have thought of it like that.” She told herself more than she was telling Aleah, but she had to constantly remind herself she wasn’t here to find love, she was here to get away, and hide.

Aleah tilted her head, unable to help herself from smiling. "You wouldn't?" She teased, "you can relax Cosette, I'm just poking some fun at you. This is the first time Silas has had to share the barn and I just wanted to make sure that everyone can get along."

Cosette sighed, “Sorry, been a little jumpy for a while,” She admitted, feeling like she was never going to feel completely safe again, but she kept reminding herself she wasn’t even on the same continent as Henri. “Oh, he’s been very accommodating, I was very happy to see Estella all settled when I arrived.” That had given her so much relief to know that her horse had made it safely and someone had taken care of her.

Aleah waved a hand, "don't worry about it, I know some people aren't used to my approach," she smiled, "when school's in session I'm a professional, I promise, but when I get to know my teachers I like to be more approachable." And sometimes that made things sticky but Aleah preferred to know who she was working with instead of keeping distance all the time. "I'm glad that you two are getting along, but I didn't have too much worry, I don't think Silas has a mean bone in his body."

Cosette nodded, willing to let her being worried about Aleah be her biggest concern over wondering if Henri would even try crossing the pond to find her. She smiled, wondering if Silas ever raised his voice at his son ever. “I don’t think he does either, which is probably why he works so well with the horses.” She could tell from their ride how he easily communicated with his horse without a word, and it made her feel more at ease.

"Probably," Aleah agreed, "but I have to admit that I don't go out to the barn that often, I've never ridden a horse before in my life." She said, sure she could ride a motorcycle but there was something about getting on a large animal that had a mind of its own didn't appeal to her much. "But Silas has always kind and rarely complains."

Cosette knew a lot of people that hadn’t ridden before, but it still surprised her. “Well, you can always ask me if you want to try one day,” She figured she could at least go down to the barn and meet Estella, even if she didn’t want to ride at all. “He is, I hope I don’t cause him to start to complain.” She chuckled, though worried she’d be in his way.

"I'll think about it," Aleah smiled, finding it kind of Cosette to even offer in the first place, she wasn't sure if she would take her up on the offer but she would think about it. "I don't know if there's anyone who can make him complain," Aleah laughed softly, "he has the patience of a saint."

“I guess that’s true, if he can’t even complain about his son or nephews,” Cosette laughed, thinking about her friends with kids that would complain about being a parent sometimes. She wasn’t sure if they were ever serious or just joking, but she hoped her own motherhood wouldn’t be like that. She felt the twinge of sadness at the thought of how close she’d been, till Henri decided to show his true colors. Cosette forced herself to smile, not wanting to think about that again. “Do you want to go out and see the barn?” Wanting anything to distract herself.

Aleah laughed, about to say that Samuel didn't offer much to complain about but she was distracted by the flash of something sad across Cosette's face, wondering just what it was but wasn't sure if she should ask if she was okay or not. Before she would ask Cosette asked her about seeing the barn. For a minute Aleah hesitated but then nodded, "sure, why not."

Cosette sighed quietly with relief, she wasn’t sure why she hoped she’d say yes, but she was glad to have something to do other than stare at each other. “I’m glad you approve of my room, I wanted to make it comfortable for them and me, ah, as well.” She stood up from behind her desk and pushed in her chair, looking around her room once more, proud at the work she’d put into it.

Aleah nodded, "I think that it's perfect." She said as she got up from her chair and picked up her helmet, "if you don't mind I think I'll drop off my helmet at my bike on the way over to the barn." That way she wouldn't have to lug it with her everywhere and risk it getting broken somehow.

“Oh, what kind of bike is it?” Cosette wondered if it was anything like her little Vespa she rode around town back home, she loved weaving in and out on the streets, even though she didn’t go that fast. She headed for the door, closing, and locking it behind the two of them before they headed out.

"Street bike, I usually don't ride it to school but my SUV wouldn't start this morning so I didn't have much of a choice." She explained as they left the classroom and headed out of the building. "But the bike does get much better gas mileage but if I ride it I can't dress as cute." She joked. Once they were outside she walked over to a black street bike and set her helmet on it.

“Ah, little more, um.. Sporty than a vespa,” Cosette commented, knowing even at top speeds, the vespa wasn’t a match for that kind of bike. She shrugged, thinking her outfit was cute, but walked over to the bike. “How long have your ridden?” she asked, debating on maybe looking into getting a vespa here, though her home wasn’t the closest to the school.

"Just a little," Aleah laughed, "I like to go fast." She admitted to Cosette, thinking a little of her brother Beck, more specifically the face he had made when she smoked him in a race on their bikes before they had gone their separate ways. "For like five years, one of my brothers got a Harley and go a huge ego over it so I had to show him up." She joked, winking at Cosette.

Cosette raised an eyebrow, feeling a little scared about going so fast, but she rode horses for a living, so it didn’t make sense to feel that way. “I had a vespa, back in France. Not nearly as fast.” She chuckled as they made their way to the barn. She couldn’t help looking out for Silas’s truck, wondering if he was here, telling herself it was to pull the prank on him later today.

"Oh but still just as fun." Aleah smiled, she definitely liked the thrill that her bike offered, the way it made her feel something instead of just existing. Sure it was dangerous to whip around corners at high speed but she only had to look out for herself. She caught the way that Cosette looked around the parking lot of the barn, her smile curving a little higher, "looking for someone?"
