“Should have known. Might have to try wearing yellow next time,” Jessie teased, knowing she most likely wouldn’t dress up in anything brighter than gray. She shrugged her shoulders, “I haven’t explored this whole town, so there might be a snow cone shack still.” But if he was willing to wade through the crowd at a school function, she could, if they were actually friends like he said.

Jake laughed, feeling like hell would have to freeze over if she willingly wore the color yellow. "Uh huh." He teased her, "and I'll wear yellow to match." He joked, nodding as she spoke about the town but he doubted there was a place to find snow cones outside of any event. He would be willing to wait to have, that would make it all the more worth it. He looked around as they walked, the little store fronts interesting but nothing really catching his attention.

“Awww, you wouldn’t have to do that,” But Jessie felt a blossoming burn in her chest at the thought of having a friend that would actually stick around possibly. Matching colors didn’t seem like the sort of thing someone who planned to ditch would do. The silence fell between them and Jessie didn’t mind it as they walked down the street, each checking out the display, though neither seemed to find anything of interest. “How do you like school?” She asked, wondering if he was also a hardcore nerd as well as a cowboy.

"If you do it, I'll do it." Jake smiled, not thinking she'd really do something like that but he liked joking around with her as they walked. It was nice to be around someone new who didn't know his life story or like how he had failed his brother. He looked over Jessie, tilting his head, "school is alright, I'd rather be outside but it isn't that bad." He told her, plus he was lucky enough that school kind of came easy to him so he didn't have to try too hard. "What about you?"

Jessie felt a shiver run down her spine, as if she’d just been double dog dared to do something as a kid, “Fine, I’ll wear yellow. At some point.” She teased, not having a single piece of yellow clothing in her closet. “Not a fan of it, I do enough to get by,” She knew she should be better about her academics, but she had her future planned out, she didn’t need to focus so much on getting certain grades.

"Well now, you gotta tell me when so I don't get the day wrong." Jake teased her teased her as he pushed his hat a little farther back on his head. "I'm sure classes won't be that hard and I've heard rumors it's easy to get away with stuff." He shrugged, wondering if this town kept secrets to keep all the fuss low.

“I don’t know how I’m going to tell you, carrier pigeon I guess,” Jessie shrugged, a smirk playing at her lips, though it was partially true, how would she be able to tell him if she was wearing yellow. “Good to know, I am not studious when it comes to schoolwork.” She admitted with a grimace. Give her a case file or a true crime book and she’d be all over it.

"Alright, I'll keep an eye out for one." He winked at her teasingly, "I'll be mighty impressed if I find one outside my window with a note strapped to it." He chuckled and tucked his hands back into his pockets. "I'm sure you'll be fine though, if you need help there's always Google."

Jessie felt her cheeks flush a little at the wink, but told herself they had just met, they were just friends. Nothing more. “Well, while I’m finding pigeons, and training them, and then hopefully they are finding their way, we can exchange numbers?” she pulled out her phone from her purse, though she didn’t hand it over, since she wasn’t sure he’d actually want her number. “Google has been my best friend since I discovered it,” She chuckled, knowing she’d spent way too much time looking up things she shouldn’t have. “Quizlet has been very essential too.” She’d passed a lot of tests and filled out most of her questions because of it.

"Hmmm, I think we can do that, but the second I get the pigeon that's the only way you're going to hear from me." Jake chuckled, looking down at her phone then held out his hand. "Quizlet?" He repeated, "I've never heard of that."

At the sight of his open hand, Jessie didn’t waste time unlocking her phone and handing it over to him. “Well, it might not happen for a long time.” Or at all, she thought, but didn’t plan on telling him that. “You haven’t stumbled upon Quizlet? It’s amazing. Usually if you google a test or a subject, there’s all the answers you need.” It had saved her when she’d taken a test at home while sick, she hadn’t studied for it, but with the help of Quizlet, she passed.

"Well now don't be crushin' my dreams now." Jake teased as he took her phone and put himself in her contacts then shot himself a quick text, his phone pinging from his pocket but it wasn't a normal ringtone because, for some reason, his ringtone was the sound of a cow mooing but he didn't react as he handed her phone back to her. "Huh, I never heard of it but I'll try to remember for a rainy day."

“Your dreams?” Jessie asked with a raised eyebrow and a look that read ‘what you talkin’ about.’ “I’m the one that came up with the pigeons in the first place, shouldn’t it be my dream?” She asked as she heard the ping from what she assumed was his own phone and felt a flutter of happiness that at least he didn’t give a fake one. She scoffed, “Should have known it would be a cow.” She smirked, rolling her eyes and wondering why it had to be a rainy day to use it to study, but she didn’t want to talk about school and homework anymore.

"Well now it's one of my dreams," Jake joked, "my brother and cousin would be jealous if I got letters by pigeon and they didn't." He said with a laugh, knowing Reeds mind would pretty much be blown if he saw that. Jake laughed at her comment about his phone, shaking his head, "well yeah, I gotta represent somehow." He continued to joke around with her, glad that she wasn't a super serious person. "My brothers is a rooster crowing."

Jake chuckled, shaking his head as he handed her phone back to her. "He's certainly something," he chuckled, where he was calm and thought things through Reed flew by the seat of his pants and tended to learn about things the hard way instead of thinking before taking the next steps. "I'll have to remember that website if I have any issues in class."

Jessie took her phone back and immediately clicked to edit his profile, deciding to add a cowboy smiley face next to his name, and then changed the profile picture to a horse emoji. She felt a little stupid sometimes, but she liked adding little details to their profiles, it felt much like detective work. But that meant she was sometimes creepy about having a list of things people liked and birthdays, and other things she felt were important. At least, that’s what her old friends had said when her mom died, and every other kid in school. “So, this upcoming rodeo, you’ll be riding a bull?”

Jake raised an eyebrow as he watched her edit his contact information, trying not to laugh. "Well if you're gonna do all that, I'll make sure your picture is a pigeon." He teased, thinking it was almost kind of cute that she personalized his information like that. "Yeah, I'll be bull riding and my brother will be on the bronco, and then my cousin will be calf roping with me."

Jessie turned to face Jake, a blank look on her face until she realized he’d been watching her. “Oh, I mean… I just like to have little details about people.” She didn’t want to tell him just how much she’d probably accumulate, but it wasn’t long before she added notes about him riding a bull and his brother riding broncos. “Calf roping… Does that hurt the rope?” She asked with a serious tone and look on her face, but she was entirely joking about it.

Jake nodded, finding the trait a little endearing. He was about to answer her question when what exactly she said registered and started to laugh, unable to stop himself as his shoulders shook. "N-not that I know of," he chuckled, "no rope activists have come to protest." He joked, shaking his head.

Jessie smirked, “Well, guess I’ll be the first,” She teased, wondering how silly it would be to have an inside joke with him, hold up a sign screaming to free the ropes. She was sure everyone there would think she was stupid and crazy, but she’d laugh all the same. “Do you get a lot of protesters at the rodeo?” She asked, assuming crazy vegans glued themselves to something, trying to prevent whatever they thought they knew about rodeos.

Jake laughed, shaking his head at her. "I've never seen any, but I guess security is pretty tight." He said, wondering if protestors really showed up and he was just oblivious to it all. He knew people didn't like rodeos but he hadn't seen anything negative happening to the animals, his family at least took care of them. "But my family and I take care of our animals properly."

“Well obviously you do, I always thought people should at least go see a rodeo before you judge anything.” She shrugged, feeling the same about judging people, seeing how her dad was treated, even after he was found not guilty with major proof. “So, what time do you head out to the rodeo?” she asked, tilting her head as she tried to guess the time in her head. ‘4:30. Waaaay too early for me.’

Jake smiled softly, glad that she wasn't one of the judgmental types but had had a feeling deep down that she wasn't. "I agree and it depends on the time of the rodeo, there are a lot that go on in the evening so I don't have to get up too early and luckily this upcoming one is like that, it starts around seven so I won't need to be there until probably five."

Jessie blinked in shock at the actual time he mentioned, “So, not early in the morning?” she asked, wondering if it would be weird for her to tag along with him. She was awake at five in the afternoon and was definitely ready to go by seven. “Would it be bad for me to show up at five?” Maybe customers weren’t allowed in till a little before seven, but she knew it couldn’t hurt to ask.

Jake shook his head, "nope, not this time." He told her, glad it wasn't at a crazy time in the morning though he would still make it whatever time it was. His head tilted a little when she asked about showing up, unable to stop the smile from pulling at the corner of his lips. "I don't think so, a lot of people show up early to check out the fair and whatever else is going on."

Jessie could see how that would make sense, seeing as it wasn’t just the rodeo. There were shops, and rides, and food trucks, making it a small carnival. “Would I be able to check out the horses before? Or is it participants only?” It meant running into other horses, actually maybe touching his horse, but it also meant, possible time with Jake.

"As long as your with me I can show you the horses." Jake said with a smile, he'd seen a few guys back there with their families or with a random girl to try to impress them, his brother guilty of such a task. "And maybe the bulls and other live stock if you want." He added, wondering if she'd want to see the chickens or the rabbits that would be on display.

“I can see the bulls? Are they actually mean?” Jessie always wondered how they took care of the animals if they hated being around humans so much. She didn’t want to admit out loud that she liked when he said with him. So at least she wouldn’t be shown around by some random she didn’t know. "What other livestock?" She raised an eyebrow, wondering what all was involved besides the events.

Jake shook his head, "they're assholes bit they aren't mean all the time, during rodeo they have straps around their flank to make them buck more but out of the rodeo and training we don't mess with them." He told her, knowing there was a lot of hate on the sport but he and his family did try to take care of the animals the best that they could. "Well with the fair there's usually animals up for show which includes rabbits, sheep, llamas, animals like that."
