I grow rows and rows of roses
By the mile
I make perfect, practiced poses
Outgoing- Maya is a social butterfly. She blends in with the popular crowd and always has a smile on her face, it's what is expected of her. She is friendly towards everyone but at the same time won't befriend just anyone. She doesn't get too nervous about things and doesn't mind being the center of attention. She has the confidence to shine.
Sheep- She tends to follow the crowd, specifically the popular one, usually agreeing with whoever is in charge and doing what is expected of her. It isn't because she wants to specifically, but because she feels like she needs to. She's terrified of being turned against and becoming the next victim of bullying even though she hates having to be mean to people in the first place. In a way it's like she's two faced. If she's with the crowd she'll side with them but on her own, if she feels like she's safe, her true-self would make an appearance.
Hardworking- Even though it goes against the popular girl image, Maya is expected to be the smart on, her grades are supposed to be perfect, everything about her is supposed to be perfect. Which means more time spent in front of the mirror and even more time spent studying when she can while keeping it a secret from her so called friends. It puts a lot of weight on her shoulders but Maya is determined to keep up the act, telling herself that in college she can be herself.
Vapid- She isn't the brightest crayon in the box, jokes can go over her head and she's not very up to date on being street smart. She tries to hide it but sometimes it's impossible to hide that blank look in her eyes when someone is trying to explain something to her. Despite all of this and how she acts, she does have a good heart, she's just afraid to show it.

So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feeling in the moment?
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they let me be?
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
Maya doesn't remember much about her childhood. What she knows is that her parents were drug addicts and left Lewis to raise her and her sister, something she is very thankful for but wouldn't admit. She doesn't remember their time in foster care and she barely knows other members of her family outside of who she was raised with. All she knows is that they weren't willing to help and she despises them for it. Maybe if they had helped her parents would still be alive and she wouldn't be forced into this life of perfection where she must walk a tight rope and follow the strict rules given to her.
When her parents had passed away she and her siblings were left in the system as social workers tried to find family to take them in and though they were hesitant at first, they took them. William and his wife bit the bullet. They had the money and the huge house but did they have the gene that made them good parents? Maya would say no. In that house everything had to be perfect-like a magazine. The kids were forced to stay in their rooms, they could only play there and if any toys or mess were found outside of those rooms they were punished. William and Estella wanted perfection and to accomplish this they categorized each child. While Lewis was defined as the athlete, Maya was crowned as the perfect one.

I'm so sick of pretty
I want something true, don't you?

You just seem like your life's been a dream
Since the moment you opened your eyes
From the moment they came into that home Estella took Maya under her wing, throwing her into acting and modeling classes for children and dressing her like she was going to be photographed for a magazine and Maya obeyed. She contained her energy-getting mad if she got dirt on her clothes and refusing to go outside unless she was in play clothes. She wanted to please her aunt and uncle, she was determined to be the perfect daughter she was meant to be. She did not speak out, did not argue, followed every single rule and took on every extracurricular. Her future has been planned out. She is going to stay slim and go into an ivy league school where she will get a business agree and will then take over a branch of the family business. There hasn't been any room for her to be herself except for in her head or in her room where she can scribble in her notebooks and indulge herself in practicing the violin-something she hides from her friends.
In school her friend group is the popular girls. You know the mean girls in the movies? She's part of that group and though on the inside it makes her feel bad, she conforms to their expectations. She is constantly shopping, going to parties, and doing everything expected of popular girls. She believes that she enjoys this, though there are parts of herself that she keeps hidden from her friends due to fear of ridicule. Maya believes that her sister Sasha is just like her, so much so that she doesn't notice when her friends make fun of Sasha or intentionally leave her out of their get togethers. Maya is easily manipulated by her friends into believing that whenever Sasha does bail it's due to her own choice-not because her friends have bullied her to the point of not wanting to be around them.
