"Reed are you sure you should do this? What if you fuck up your leg even more?" Jake asked with a frown, looking at Reed where he was standing at the edge of a set of cliffs that faced the deep end of the lake. The twins had heard of a few guys heading out there to chase some thrills and of course Reed had to go and Jake wasn't going to let him go on his own in case something happened. "Yeah it's fine," Reed waved his hand at his brothers, so far the others who had jumped didn't have any problems so he didn't see what all the fuss was about. "If you don't stop babying me I'm going to push you over the edge." He added, shooting an annoyed look at his brother. Jake rolled his eyes, "whatever, can't push me when I'm not here." He pointed out, running past Reed and jumping off the edge of the cliff and into the water, leaving Reed standing with a few other guys.

For most of the time Shannon had been able to avoid doing the usual activities, the normal boring ones the counselors wanted to drag you to for supposed fun. She’d pretended she was sick, on her period, and straight up just said no to some of them, receiving scolding looks when she did. She didn’t care, as long as she didn’t cause trouble, and so far, no one knew who spiked the punch bowl, she was free to do what she pleased. Today she was headed out to a spot she stumbled upon when she and a group had snuck out a few nights ago to cliff dive into the lake, she’d been looking for a spot to pee, and found a little hidden alcove it seemed. The perfect place to read. She dressed like she was planning to go swimming, packed her little backpack with snacks, books, and water, before heading out, not expecting anyone to be out there at this time. As she got closer though, she heard a few voices talking, laughing, shouting. She scrunched up her nose, but as long as whoever it was didn’t see her, they wouldn’t know she was there. She kept her distance from the cliff, trying to hide amongst the trees, but it was hard to keep quiet with all the leaves and sticks on the ground. ![](https://img.ltwebstatic.com/images3_pi/2023/02/10/1675999414a7bce1c8dbc1467e5147fbd318cfad82_thumbnail_600x.jpg) With white shorts and sandals

Reed watched as a few other guys jumped off the cliff, his arms crossed over his chest as he laughed but his brothers words were echoing in the back of his mind, making him hesitate from taking the plunge. It would be just his luck if something went wrong and he wound up back in a hospital. He was about to try to jump again, brushing back the thoughts when the hairs on the back of his neck started to stand on end, making him stop. It felt like when he was back home and felt eyes on him, turning around to see the figure of a coyote or two that he'd have to scare off but unlike at home he didn't have his rifle here. He slowly turned around, eyes narrowing as he scanned the tree line for whatever it was that was out there. If it was some kind of dangerous animal he would have to find a way to warn the others so that no one would get hurt.

Despite the sounds of people jumping into the lake drifted over to Shannon in the trees, Shannon felt like there were eyes watching her, sending a shiver down her back. She kept her eyes on the prize, spotting the tops of a wall belonging to whatever building used to be here long before the camp. Behind that was her goal, and as long as she wasn’t spotted, no one would know she was there. She felt a creeping feeling crawl up her spine and she knew she was being watched again. She couldn’t stop herself from eyeing the cliff from the side, but could only make out a few figures standing at the edge, nothing more.

Someone else jumped but Reed slowly stepped away, staring into the tree line as he tried to find whatever it was that was staring when his eyes caught a hint of white. His eyebrow raised, he couldn't tell what it was exactly since he was still far away but it didn't seem big enough to belong to something like a mountain lion. His head tilted as he got closer, gaze traveling up until the dots finally connected and he realized he was staring at a person. He sighed through his nose, "is there a reason that you're out here hiding and being a peeping tom?" He called out to whoever it was.

Shannon was only a few steps away from disappearing when she was spotted. She rolled her eyes at whoever called out to her and stepped out from behind the tree she was currently hiding behind. “Not a peeping tom, just passing through.” She called out, though muttered under her breath about how annoying it was that she now had someone know she was out there.

Reed couldn't stop his lips from curling when he saw it was the girl from the bonfire who he'd disastrously flirted with and then she had attempted to flirt with both his cousin and brother to make him mad, which only made him all the more interested in her. "Call it what you want," he replied, "you here to jump off the cliff too?"

Shannon raised an eyebrow and slowly turned towards the cliff, barely making out who it was, “Did I stutter? I said I’m passing through,” She spat, crossing her arms as she rolled her eyes. “Clearly I’m not cliff jumping.” She yelled to whoever it was on the rock cliff. She turned on her heels and started heading towards her original destination, muttering under her breath to herself at who the fuck caught her sneaking through the forest even though they clearly couldn’t hear properly.

Reeds face broke into a grin as he tried not to laugh from her reaction. Apparently she was this spicy all the time and not just when sipping on some special punch. Instead of turning back to the cliff he started walking towards her, curious as to where she was going when clearly all the fun was over here. "Passing through to where?" He asked.

Shannon frowned when it sounded like he was following her, whoever it was, so she picked up her pace, but worried he’d find her spot. “Just hiking to be alone.” It wasn’t a complete lie, but she didn’t tell him she was out there to read, which she wanted to do alone. “You can go jump to your death now.” She turned to face him, a little shocked at how quickly he’d caught up to her. She could now see it was one of the twins from the bonfire and while she couldn’t quite distinguish which one by looks yet, she could tell it was the one who pissed her off by his actions. She groaned inwardly, wondering how long it was going to take to drop his attention she didn’t ask for.

Reed didn't buy that excuse one bit, if she was really hiking then why was she dressed in a bathing suit? It made no sense to him. "Jump to my death? Now that's just a bit dramatic." He joked, even with his brothers words still echoing in his head he didn't think he'd be so unlucky that he would die. "You don't look like you're really dressed for a hike." He said, crossing his arms over his chest but was smirking.

“Maybe I’m just wishing for it,” Shannon grumbled, keeping her eye on him as he crossed his own arms over his chest, like he was making fun of her, though she didn’t think he actually was. She gave him a smile as if she was going to be sweet, tilting her head as she looked down at her outfit. “Listen, I dress how I want, so you can shove it with the whole ‘not dressed to hike’ shit and fuck off.” She didn’t understand why it was his problem what she wore to hike.

Her sweet smile caught him for a moment, making him think that maybe this girl was going to be nice for a minute. Then she spoke and whatever foolish thought he had was gone and he almost laughed. He kind of liked the spice she had about her. "Hey, I'm just saying because you could easily walk into poison ivy or trip over a rock and get all bruised up." He shrugged, the smile still on his face, her telling to fuck off almost making him laugh.

Shannon really rolled her eyes at him, spouting off the same things the counselors had listed off during orientation, and yes, she’d googled what poison ivy looked like so she could avoid it, but she didn’t understand why he bothered. “Don’t wreck your brain with worry about me.” She turned her back on him and headed for the crumbling walls of the old building, hoping he’d go back to cliff jumping and his own friends, and leave her to read.

"Worried? Who said I was worried?" Reed smirked, "I would I say I'm more curious than worried." He said, about to say that he would laugh if she did end up with a rash from poison ivy and tell her I told you so but for once he held his tongue, thinking twice before speaking. " He looked from her to the direction he was going, tilting his head, "now what's really interesting are those ruin looking things over there, maybe I should go check those out instead."

Shannon raised an eyebrow, “Funny way of showing you’re curious,” she thought, if he was curious, he would ask her more about where she was going, then warning her about poison ivy and tripping over shit. “Go ahead, knock yourself out.” She said, but she really hoped if she feigned interest in him following, he would find her boring, and head back to jump off the cliff. She climbed through one of the openings, stepping into a soft grassy floor, ivy hanging around, and the feeling that she stepped into one of her fantasy novels had her forgetting Reed was following behind her.

Reeds head cocked to the side when she told him to knock himself out and grinned. "If you say no." He replied, taking that as an invitation and a sign that he was wearing her down. He followed after her without hesitation, looking around the stone walls curiously and climbing through another opening like Shannon had, landing on his feet but a lightning bolt of pain shot up his back, making him wince. He tried to brush off the feeling as he looked around. "Well dang."

Shannon grinded her teeth with irritation when he continued to follow her, though she had a feeling that regardless of what she told him, to fuck off or not, he would still follow. She eyed him from the side as she joined him, narrowing her eyes at what she saw, but kept it to herself. She turned her attention back to the place, setting her backpack down on the ground, “Yes, now you can see where I was going. You can leave now.” She wasn’t going to get comfortable and pull out her books until he left.

Reed could practically feel her eyes burning into him but that just kept the easy smirk on his face as he looked around. It was a cool area for sure but what anyone would want to do out here was beyond him. It could be a good make out or party spot but none of that was very fun in the middle of the day. He looked at one of the walls, poking at the ivy, "why do I have to leave? I've been an angel."

Shannon sighed loudly, rolling her eyes, and her shoulders slumped in slight defeat. “Because,” She started, trying to figure out what to say that will make him go away, but she had a feeling he wasn’t going to be leaving quickly. “You came out to cliff jump, so go cliff jump.” And leave her alone is what she wanted to add, but clearly no one in the world understood what those words meant.

Reed looked over at Shannon, trying not to laugh. "Plans can change, maybe I want to stand here and count all the leaves." He joked, turning his attention back to the wall and pretending to do just that. "Did you just come here to sit around? That seems like a waste of time, not as fun as cliff jumping, unless you're scared to do that."

Shannon hated change, she hated when plans changed, and when people were the reason for it. She crossed her arms and huffed loudly, feeling irritated she wasn’t already reading, ready to get this book finished because she had the next one in the series ready to go. “I’m not scared to cliff jump, just didn’t want to do it.” She’d actually gone with Kinley, and this random dude named Darius, and a few others a few nights ago, “It’s more fun at night anyways.” She muttered, walking over to her backpack and pulled out the bedspread she snatched from Trashley’s bed after she left. She’d wash it, but she wasn’t going to use her own bedspread. “I just came out here to get away from people like you.” She stated as she laid out the blanket under one of the trees that grew near the crumbling wall.

Hearing her huff and grumble about made Reed laugh, hardly able to to stop himself as he kept his eyes on the leaves as she spoke. "Cliff jumping at night? Now that's ballsy and means there's no reason to not do it now," he pointed out, finally looking over as she laid out the blanket and his hand went to his chest. "People like me? You mean handsome cowboys who serenade you and would whisk you off on a horse in a heart beat? Sounds like you don't have the mind for adventure or having fun."

Shannon straightened out the blanket, trying to take her time in hopes that he would just eventually leave if he thought she was boring. She didn’t want to go cliff jumping, and she definitely didn’t want to go with him. “The reason is, I don’t want to,” She stated, taking a seat onto the blanket, grabbing her phone and started scrolling through tik tok, if he didn’t leave, she could at least add to her to be read pile with booktok. She rolled her yes at his description, “Please, why do I need you to whisk me off on a horse, when I can ride my own.” The itch to ride had been hard to ignore, but the stupid counselors had said the horse-riding groups were already full for the entire summer. She didn’t care if he didn’t think she was not into adventures or having fun, because she had her own definition of those words.

"Aw, you're really hurting my heart here." Reed joked, eyebrow raising as he looked at her. She had set up all of this just to watch her phone? Seemed kind of pointless to him. "Because obviously you didn't get on the sign up list in time to be part of those riding groups," he said with a slow smile, "but I know my way around all that bullshit." He added as he stepped away from the wall and walked around the crumbling building, looking at it curiously and wondering if or rather, when, it would collapse. He was a bit surprised that she was an equestrian but then again a lot of girls tried to claim to be one but once he saw them in action he would see it was all talk and little skill.

“Don’t care,” Shannon mumbled loudly enough for him to hear, though her eyes were glued to her phone, tagging another video for her growing collection she’d need to go through for her next shopping trip. She rolled her eyes at him stating the obvious, something the stupid counselor had also told her when she asked to ride. When she said she didn’t need a teacher to watch her, they laughed at her, and told her to try again next year. “I don’t need your way around that bullshit.” Really, all she needed was a way to the school to ride her own horse, but she had to leave her car on campus because there was only faculty parking here.

"You care enough to respond." Reed taunted back, going over to a wall that he noticed had some bricks that weren't flush, he pulled at a few and when they didn't fall away he carefully grabbed on and tried to climb up the wall, there wasn't a real reason behind him doing this, he just wanted to see how high he could get before he'd fall. "Fine then, lose out on private rides," he called back to her, "shouldn't matter anyway since you're just another phone obsessed girl."

“Mostly hoping if I say the wrong thing you’ll leave,” Shannon sighed, growing bored of her phone already, itching to get reading already, but he was delaying it by staying so close. She heard some rustling and frowned, looking up and finding him on top of the wall, making her roll her eyes at how stupid boys could be, although she had climbed the wall herself the first day, she’d found it. “If this ‘private’ ride involves you riding with me, then it’s not really private, is it.” She pointed out, not going to fall for him trying to rile her up about being a phone obsessed girl. Yes, she technically was when she didn’t have a book in her hands, but if given the choice of a book or her phone, she picked the book.

Reed laughed from deep in his chest at her response of him leaving, he was having too much fun poking the bear so to speak that kept him going as he continued to climb to the top of the wall and sat on it, peering down at her with a smirk. "More private than riding out with a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing." He called down to her, "unless you're just talking big and don't know a horses head from its rear."

Shannon hated how she felt that stupid laugh of us, somehow vibrating all the way down to the ground where she was at. She put her phone down and looked longingly at her bag that held her book and sadly groaned at how she was missing so much because this stupid boy just had to bother her. “Still not interested,” She stated, trying to avoid being alone with him as much as possible, because if it was going to be like this, she might end up killing him. “I don’t have to prove shit to you.” She had ribbons and trophies at home to prove she wasn’t just talking big, but that was back home, so it wasn’t any help to her now.
