“I guess that’s the Brightside to a long drive, what sideshow attractions did you stop at? Biggest ball of yarn?” Jessie teasingly asked, though always wondered if people actually visited those things or if they were even real. She couldn’t stop smiling when he opened the door for her, and she half climbed her way up. “Well… I don’t have a horse, so I wouldn’t know the feeling.” She chuckled as she buckled herself in.

"So many it's all just a blur." Jake chuckled, "I do remember something about a big piece of corn." He joked, making sure she was all in the truck before closing the door and climbing into his side of the vehicle. "I'm sure there's something you have that you wouldn't want to go with out." He responded, starting up his truck and heading out of the parking lot.

“They have giant corn now?” Jessie laughed, wondering what else was left that the world had to enlarge, though she didn’t want to think about it. She tilted her head when he asked what she couldn’t go without and her first thought was her dad, but she didn’t want him to think she was weird for that, “Honestly? I’d die if I didn’t have podcasts.” Though she wondered if she’d be so interested in such things if her mother was alive, if her dad hadn’t introduced her into true crime, or if the world as perfect and there was no crime.

"Apparently, it wasn't that impressive." Jake laughed, leaning back in his seat as he drove. He looked over at Jessie for a moment when she was silent but smiled at her answer. "I've never really listened to any of those."

“Yeah? I take that off my road trip bucket list then,” Jessie chuckled, betting there was someone out there with such a list but was there anything worth while to see on it was her question. She wasn’t shocked when people said they didn’t listen to podcasts, a lot of people didn’t know there were podcasts of just about everything. “I bet there’s a few about rodeos.” She didn’t know what they would talk about but maybe he would enjoy them like she enjoyed the true crime ones.

Jake chuckled, "good idea, don't waste part of your life there like I did." He said, keeping his eyes on the road as he headed back towards the school. "You think so? I already sleep, eat, and breathe rodeo, I think I'll avoid listening about it all the time." He joked, but maybe he'd check one out for the hell of it but that gave him an idea. "What kind do you listen to?"

Jessie chuckled, “Did you have a favorite roadside attraction?” she asked, trying to think what would make him go ‘Woah’ and stare for a while. She raised an eyebrow when he asked about what podcasts interested her. “I’ll give you a chance to guess.” It was too easy, though maybe she was getting better at keeping that side of her to herself.

"Worlds Biggest Ball of Yarn for sure." Jake said with a straight face...that he couldn't hold for long before laughing, "but I think my favorite part was just driving through different places, not necessarily stopping somewhere." He said, feeling like that sounded kind of lame but he did enjoy the drive. He glanced at Jessie from the corner of his eye with a slight smirk as he pulled into the parking lot and into a space, "obviously podcasts about knitting."

“Really? Are you secretly a cat?” Jessie teased, feeling like only cats and old ladies who knit liked yarn. “I haven’t ventured outside of Maine honestly, I wouldn’t mine seeing the drive down to Texas just for the heck of it.” She didn’t understand why they hadn’t really traveled much, but it had to do with her dad’s job, she was sure. She chuckled, “Nailed it.” She teased, finding herself a little sad that they were already back at the school.

"Maybe." Jake laughed, "it's a long drive but if you go the right routes it isn't too bad." He said as he shut off his truck and shifted to face Jessie. "Knew it, I'll expect a hat for Christmas." He joked, hoping that they'd be friends still by that time and hopefully after that.

Jessie giggled, wondering if she could learn to knit one in time for Christmas and figured probably not, but that didn’t stop her from leaning her elbow on the console and asking, “Navy blue, okay?” she teased, smirking as she eyed his shirt before her eyes drifted up to his lips, though she forced herself to look him in the eyes immediately.

Jake found himself leaning into Jessie as a smile crossed his lips. "For sure, it's my favorite color." He teased back, watching her eyes drift down but then snapped back up to his and his smile widened a little. He hoped he was reading her signals as he leaned in to close the distance. His eyes started to close as their lips were about to meet when there was a loud thump of something hitting the windshield, making him jump back and snap towards whatever the hell it was to find the little stuffed pigeon slumped against his windshield and there was laughter as he saw his brother race away. "That fucker." He threw open his door and stood, leaning out of the truck as he yelled after his brother, "I'M GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS REED!"

Jessie felt like time slowed down as he leaned in towards her and she was sure this time if she leaned in, they would kiss. She was starting to close her eyes and lean in closer when there was a thump and laughter outside the truck causing Jake to jump back. She turned to find the pigeon she’d given Jake earlier against the windshield and his brother laughing and running off. She couldn’t stop herself from sighing and leaning back as Jake yelled at his brother, feeling that electricity in the air was gone, just like that.

Jake shook his head and grabbed the pigeon from the windshield before dropping back into the truck, flexing the wings of the little bird before looking at Jessie with a sheepish smile. "Sorry...about that, my brother thinks he's some kind of comedian."

Jessie was looking down at her hands as she waited for her face to stop feeling hot, but she feel like it would never go back down while around Jake. She did force herself to turn and face him when he spoke, giving him a small reassuring smile, “That’s okay. I think he’d only sell two tickets if he ever tried to make a job of it.” The two tickets would be her and Jake, and she would buy as many pigeons as she could to throw onto the stage. “Soooo….. Will you be at the barn tomorrow?” She asked, playing with a loose string on her jeans.

"Two tickets is pretty generous." Jake chuckled softly, glad she wasn't put off by his brothers antics. He looked at her curious when she asked about tomorrow and took a moment to remember what his plans were and nodded. "Yeah, I plan on it. You want to come learn to ride?" He teased.

“Well, I figured those two tickets would be you and me, to throw pigeons at him.” Jessie laughed, her smile big as she hoped he’d laugh along with her. She tilted her head in thought at the offer to learn to ride. “I don’t know about learning to ride, I haven’t even touched a horse.” She admitted, though if he stuck around and didn’t freak out on her, maybe one day.

"Oh, in that case then it's worth it." Jake laughed, imagining throwing pigeon after pigeon while his brother was stuck on stage. "Well if you ever want to meet a horse I wouldn't mind being there to help out." He offered.

Jessie giggled, “I think even before he introduces himself, I’ll just throw the first pigeon.” She teased, trying to think of something to say as a heckler in the audience. “Maybe I’ll come down tomorrow. Just text me when.” She unbuckled her seatbelt, prepared to step out of the truck to sadly end the night.

Jake chuckled, "I think that's a great idea, I'll agree to buying tickets then." He joked, perking up a little bit when she mentioned coming to the barn tomorrow. "Okay, I will." He smiled and hoped out of the truck, walking around to her side and opening the door for her, offering his hand to try to make sure she didn't fall.

“And I can get the drinks.” Jessie agreed before he stepped out of the truck, she felt her whole face lit up at the idea of seeing him tomorrow and wondered if they’d have a moment when they’d finally kiss. If that’s what was going to happen of course, but she at least would go down to meet him. She took his hand and slipped out of his truck, “Thank you. I had a lot of fun tonight.” She honestly would go back to the rodeo, it was more fun than she expected, though she hated having to take the bus out there.

Jake chuckled softly and let go her hand once she was steady on her feet. "I did too, thanks for coming." He smiled at her and carefully closed the door behind her, "I can walk you back to your dorm if you want." He offered.

Jessie felt a little disappointed that he let go of her hand, her mind racing through the past several hours trying to figure out if she was just overthinking things between her and Jake. But they had plans to meet up tomorrow, so maybe she wasn’t overthinking too much about it, even if she felt like she was. “Spend more time with my pigeon son? How could I refuse.” She laughed, finding herself wishing she could say she was excited to spend time with him, though she technically did a second ago.

Jake laughed, looking at the little pigeon in his hand and tucked it into his shirt pocket again. "Actually, he's our pigeon son, we did agree to shared custody." He joked and started to walk towards the dorms.

“Of course, that’s why I’m visiting him. It’s your weekend.” Jessie teased, feeling a little flutter in her chest that he was still going along with this little joke they had started. She wanted to slow time down, the door to the dorm was approaching fast, but she reminded herself that they had plans to hang out at the barn. “Do you have like, chores to do tomorrow?” She asked, suddenly thinking that she might be interrupting him while he worked.

"My weekend? I'm hardly prepared to take care of my son," Jake gasped as if he was in real shock but couldn't stop himself from chuckling, wondering if it would be going too far if he built a bird house for the fake bird, it would also be for a grade so maybe that would make it a good excuse. "I always muck the stall and brush him down but other wise tomorrow I'm free."

“Oh, you’ll be fine, I trust you,” Strangely enough Jessie did trust him, she wondered if her dad would feel the same though. She thought about mucking out stalls and grimaced at what it might smell like. “I can come after the mucking.” She chuckled, though she wouldn’t mind not dealing with poop.

Jake chuckled softly, something fluttering in his heart when she said she trusted him. "Don't worry, next time I'll have you muck the stalls." He joked, fuly knowing he wouldn't but it was fun to pretend that he would.

“I won’t come visit then,” Jessie scrunched up her nose in disgust at the thought of him pointing at a pitchfork and telling her to get to work. She didn’t want to not visit though, and Jake so far wasn’t indicating that he was afraid of her or thought she was odd. They reached the doors to the girl’s dorm, and she turned towards him. “Guess I’ll see you tomorrow then.” She hoped he’d text her, she couldn’t help but tell herself not to get too excited, but she rocked to the tip of her toes and back on her heels, a smile on her face.

Jake laughed at her reaction, shaking his head. He doubted she'd stay away since he didn't plan on making her actually cleaning the stalls. He glanced up at the dorms then down at her and smiled, "I guess so, promise I won't make you clean out the stalls." He teased as he looked down at her, wondering if it would be too much if he tried to kiss her cheek but he didn't want to press his luck. He tipped his hat to her then slowly headed back to the boys dorms, ready to throttle his brother.
